SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 16) CHAPTER DEVELOPMENT T By Niki Nicastro McCuistion Five Steps to Easier Fundraising I f you’re like most people, asking for money is on par with public speaking as far as stressful situations to avoid. Yet the success of volunteer organizations such as the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers depends on the fundraising efforts of local chapter members. These dollars keep the chapters active in community service, and that is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. With a little preparation, communication and cooperation, every chapter can overcome its fundraising challenges. Tell Your Story The first thing to keep in mind is that people, by and large, are generous, and they especially want to be a part of a successful project or chapter. When a person writes a check or really reaches into the wallet, he or she is motivated by the good that the money will do. As a result, successful fundraising hinges on providing potential sponsors with a compelling reason as to why they should give to your SHPE chapter and not to someone else. In crafting this story consider the following questions: • What does your chapter do? • What’s the organization’s mission? • Why does the chapter need help to accomplish this? • What are the results of the gift? • How will it make a difference and move the chapter forward? You’re in it Together Fundraising is a constant process that involves all members, not just officers. A chapter’s credibility grows when each member understands his or her role in the fundraising process, knows the story and shares it with as many people as possible. Members also can take ownership in fundraising by using their contacts. Of all the people they know, which 10 could they ask to donate $25 or $50 toward the chapter? When they join – as well as throughout the year and in every newsletter – members should be asked to approach people they already know and ask them to financially support the organization.
