R egardless of the engineering discipline or whether the goal is to fashion a product, a structure, a system or a software code, the process begins with design: a creative application of scientific and mathematical principles. In the following pages, four Latina SHPE members share how they apply their technical expertise in designing engineering solutions that bring practical value to the lives of thousands, if not millions. Their accomplishments are examples of the significant engineering contributions that Latinas make every day – despite their small numbers. According to the National Science Foundation, women represented a mere 11.1 percent of all employed engineers in 2004. The 13,000 Hispanic females composed 7.5 percent of all women engineers, not even one percent of all employed engineers. The trends in academia are consistent but offer some hope. While the number of women receiving engineering degrees has steadily increased over the past 20 years, in 2004, of the 64,675 bachelor’s degrees awarded in engineering, 13,257 (20.5 percent) went to women, and 1,108 (or 1.7 percent) went to Hispanic women. That same year, Latinas accounted for less than one percent of all the master’s and doctoral degrees awarded in engineering. Designing a solution to this problem has proved complex, involving more than simply applying mathematical and scientific principles.
