SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 31) associated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Shell has committed to developing alternative energy sources as a way to achieve sustainable mobility. “At Shell we have long recognized the conflict between the need for mobility and the toll it is taking on our planet,” David Pirret, executive vice president of Lubricants for Shell International Petroleum Company Ltd., explained in a press release. “We believe to resolve it, we must all face up to the truth that while demand for energy is growing at an increasingly rapid rate, access to conventional oil supplies is declining and there is an increasing need to keep energy-related carbon dioxide emission at acceptable levels.” With its OEM automobile partners, the company has been developing advanced lubricants such as LowSAPS, a lubricant that can make car engines’ after-treatment systems more efficient. For the Chinese market, Shell is working with automobile manufacturers to develop high-efficiency lubricant and fuel products. Shell continues to develop alternative fuel sources, such as Gas-toLiquid (GTL) Fuel for urban public transport, as well as more efficient processes to extract oil from nontraditional sources including sand and shale. Shell’s focus on second-generation biofuels has resulted in collaborating with Codexis Inc., to develop super enzymes that will convert biomass to fuel. Working with Iogen, a Canadian company, Shell is investigating the development of ethanol from straw through a process using enzymes. As a result, the world’s first commercial demonstration plant opened in Ottowa in 2004, and Iogen and its partners are now assessing design and feasibility of a full-scale commercial plant. In another joint venture, Shell and German company CHOREN Industries are building a full-scale commercial plant to develop a high performance synthetic fuel from wood residue. It will be the first demonstration plant in the world and is due to open later this year. Shell, working with General Motors, is developing hydrogen as a fuel source for future automobiles to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Shell opened two hydrogen stations in 2007, one in Shanghai and one in White Plains, New York. Both deliver gaseous hydrogen for vehicles. “The biggest challenge we face is the effect of CO2 emissions on climate change,” Pirret said. “While the alternative fuels that Shell is developing www.SHPE.org R Spring 2008 can contribute to lower CO2 emissions, making sustainable mobility a reality will require not only individual efforts, but also a collective integrated approach – a collaboration of all stakeholders, from companies and governments to the everyday motorist.” In 2007, Shell took its Eco-Marathon challenge, a successful 20-year-old European program, to the United States as the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas. The challenge – to design a vehicle that travels the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel – saw the 2007 winning team from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo achieve nearly 2,000 miles per gallon. Student teams from across the United States, Canada and South America are gearing up for the 2008 Shell Eco-Marathon Americas Challenge, which will take place April 10-13 at the California Speedway in Fontana, California. Registration for the 2008 event is now open for student teams from the three countries ENGINEERING: RESERVOIR/PETROLEUM WELL PRODUCTION PROCESS ASSET MAINTENANCE PROJECT/FACILITIES DISCIPLINE GEOLOGY/GEOPHYSICS PETROPHYSICS PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY PRODUCT/PROCESS RESEARCH Respecting opinions.
