SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 39) drawing new members, these sessions have made a significant impact in the number of members who receive internship, co-op and job offers during career fairs. Leadership development has also been vital to PolySHPE’s longevity. At the start of the fall semester, executive officers ask for volunteers to participate in the Shadow Program. As they work together throughout the year, the newer members become accustomed to the responsibilities of SHPE leadership; so, during spring elections, these members feel more confident running for office. In the area of community service, members frequently participate in March of Dimes activities and cancer awareness walks. On campus, the chapter regularly offers salsa lessons, which have become PolySHPE’s calling card. It is especially proud of its College Transition Program, which hosts local junior and senior high school students at the university. As they sample courses freshmen are required to PolySHPE advisor Haang Fung and co-advisor Carmen Villafane. take, interact with professors and college students and tour the campus, they get a feel for college life. They are also introduced to the Society. Members feel proud to belong to an organization that has clear goals to help students, Villafane said. Her colleague Fung agrees, adding that these are all “stepping stones” on the students’ transition from col- lege into the professional work force. Whether it’s dealing with a difficult student member, organizing a large community service event or reaching out to those coming behind them, now is the time for students to learn and practice the life skills that will prepare them for success in industry. Lenin Paulino, a computer engineering senior and the chapter’s president, said that SHPE has given him the extra push to get through college. “Having SHPE at Polytechnic gives a lot of Hispanics a vision of what we can do and of what we’re capable,” he said. “This is the extra push we need to fulfill our goals.” He added that as his advisor, Villafane brings out the best in SHPE members by guiding them in what they should do. “Carmen and I do this for the students because they deserve to have an active role in the university,” said Fung. “We’re happy to make sure that, by the time they leave the university, they are good and ready to succeed in industry and in everything they do.” I Become an FBI Special Agent.
