SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 42) SHPE CONFERENCE PREVIEW Reconociendo las Estrellas de SHPE STAR Awards T he presentation of the SHPE Technical Achievement and Recognition (STAR) Awards will take place at the 32nd Annual SHPE Conference to be held in Phoenix, Arizona, in November 2008. The event celebrates the achievements of individuals and companies that have helped SHPE attain its impressive has received numerous honors, awards and recognition, including Presidential appointments to scientific and educational cabinets and foundations and the distinguished alumnus recognition from the University of Texas El Paso. Junipero Serra Award This esteemed award is presented by the Society to a person who has provided unique and outstanding contributions in the fields of engineering and science, including management, administration and education. Padre Serra was a zealous and courageous Franciscan missionary who traveled thousands of miles in the Pacific West, venturing into unknown lands and facing appalling hardships to establish missions that brought faith and hope to those they served. The recipient must have demonstrated over a period of years a similar pioneering spirit and tireless enthusiasm through his or her innovative accomplishments, leading the advancement of engineering and science. He or she cannot have received this award within the last five years. Honorary Member Award This coveted award is presented to one whose accomplishments and extraordinary efforts consistently demonstrate a sincere commitment to SHPE’s goals. The award carries with it an honorary SHPE membership in perpetuity. SHPE membership is not a requirement for nomination, as previous honorees have included both SHPE members as well as nonmembers. Professional Role Model Award This award is given to an outstanding SHPE professional member in recognition of the selfless and outstanding contributions he or she has made to his or her SHPE professional chapter and the Hispanic community. The honoree must be an active SHPE professional member who brings honor and esteem to the Society through community service, leadership and commitment to SHPE. A letter of endorsement from the nominee’s chapter board must accompany the nomination. Student Role Model Award The highest national award given by the Society to a SHPE student member recognizes the selfless and outstanding contributions of an honoree to his or her SHPE student chapter and the Hispanic community while also maintaining academic excellence. The honoree must be an active SHPE student member who brings honor and esteem to the Society through academic achievement, community service and leadership. A letter of endorsement from the nominee’s chapter board must accompany the nomination. Promising Engineer Award This distinguished award honors an engineer who is recognized by his or her peers for outstanding technical accomplishments. Letters from employers, certificates or awards earned at work and an updated résumé must accompany the nomination. Nominees must not have more than three years of full-time work experience beyond graduation, excluding internships and co-operative experiences. Hispanic in Technology Award Government and Corporate These two awards are reserved for Hispanic engineers or scientists who have either made a single significant contribution or led a major technical project. The achievements cited on behalf of the nominee must have contributed to the field of engineering on a continuous basis. Contributions can be in design, production, management, research or any phase of engineering that resulted in a significant industry impact. Nominees need not be well known to the engineering public at large. Corporate Achievement Award This eminent SHPE award is reserved for a corporate executive with project, budget and departmental responsibilities who has made significant accomplishments in the scientific, technical or engineering arena within a corporation. The nominee must have five or more years of experience in a technical field, and his or her department should have a technical basis. This highly visible individual is one who has climbed the corporate ladder, achieved great success within his or her organization and gained the respect of peers by demonstrating technical expertise. Company of the Year Award This award is presented annually to a company or organization demonstrating outstanding support (financial or otherwise) to SHPE and its programs. This selection is based on the following criteria: significant, measurable and visible assistance to SHPE to meet its goals; promotion of the achievements of Hispanic employees; dedication and commitment to the advancement of the Society’s growth and development; and demonstrated partnership with public schools that have a high Hispanic enrollment. SHPE R Spring 2008 stature as The Source for Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent. SHPE National encourages nominations from nonmembers. A candidate can be nominated for more than one award if he or she meets each of the award’s criterion. Additional consideration will be provided to current SHPE members in good standing. All materials received become the property of the Society. Consideration may be given to returning items (such as photographs) whenever possible and feasible. In addition to a completed nomination form and photograph, the nomination package must also contain the nominee’s merit description (no more than two typewritten pages) which describes his or her contributions and achievements (including dates and aggregate effects or results); a biography; specific examples of how the nominee’s efforts resulted in the enhancement, development and/or promotion of SHPE; and letters of recommendation or other material that might support the nomination. The nomination deadline is July 1, 2008. This prestigious award recognizes the honoree’s unselfish and outstanding contributions in the fields of engineering and science and in the Hispanic-American community over an extended period of time. As does the award’s namesake, the recipient brings honor and esteem to the Society by symbolizing the ideal role model for today’s youth and reinforcing that “it can be done.” The candidate must have SHPE regular status for three years; not have received this award in the last five years; and have demonstrated a consistent dedication and commitment to the Society’s growth and advancement. A distinguished SHPE member, Oaxaca is currently chairman of Oaxaca Group Consultants, a Hispanic marketing firm located in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
