SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 43) Entrepreneur of the Year Award This honor is presented to a worthy Hispanic nominee who owns a minimum of 51 percent of an engineering firm that employs 10 or more people. The honoree must have demonstrated the necessary initiative, perseverance and business acumen to create a successful Hispanic business. The firm must have programs and achievements demonstrating a commitment to its community. Also, it must be at least five years old with a solid track record of financial stability. SHPE/GEM Graduate and Ph.D. Awards SHPE Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (AHETEMS) and the National GEM Consortium have established a competitive award for outstanding SHPE members who are pursuing graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Eligible students must be SHPE members in good standing and qualified GEM Fellowship applicants (i.e. must have applied or be in process of applying to the GEM Fellowship). Doctoral students/candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Master’s students must be U.S. citizens, legal residents or nonU.S. citizens. They must also be enrolled full-time (9 hrs/units) in a program leading to a technical master’s or doctoral degree (doctoral candidates may be enrolled at least half-time) at an accredited four-year college/university in the United States or Puerto Rico. They also must have a minimum 3.25 overall grade point average. In addition to a photograph, the complete nomination packet includes: nomination form; nominator statement of support specifically addressing the candidate’s contributions and/or achievements and their aggregate effects or results; nominee’s biography; and nominee’s curriculum vitae or résumé that clearly identifies academics [i.e. GPA, thesis/dissertation title, etc.], teaching experience, research experience, awards/honors, publications, presentations/speaking engagements, leadership experience, university service and community service. All nomination materials must be received by July 1, 2008 to the SHPE AHETEMS Foundation. Educator of the Year Award — K-12 and Higher Education This celebrated honor recognizes members of academia who significantly contribute to and continually promote Hispanic education in the engineering, science and mathematic disciplines. Criteria to be submitted with this nomination include a description of the educational format outlining results and accomplishments, as well as the defined correlation of the program and activity to the mission of SHPE. For the K12 award, the nominee must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident, a math or science teacher at an accredited school in the United States or Puerto Rico and have a minimum five years of teaching experience. The Higher Education Award nominee must be a SHPE member in good standing, a U.S. citizen or legal resident and be on the tenure-track or tenured faculty or administrator at an ABET-accredited four-year higher education institution in the United States or Puerto Rico. AHETEMS Academic Excellence and Leadership Award This award is presented as a $2,500 college scholarship to a qualified Hispanic high school junior who demonstrates strong academics, leadership experience and service in the Hispanic community as well as interest in attending college and pursuing a STEM degree. Eligible candidates must be entering their senior year in fall 2008 at an accredited high school in the United States or Puerto Rico. In addition to having at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, they also must be accepted into an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in the United States or Puerto Rico in fall 2009.
