SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 50) REGIONAL ROUNDUP REGION I Alaska T California (Northern) T Nevada (Northern) T Oregon T Washington San Francisco Bay Area Professional Chapter SHPE-SFBA started the new year by reaching the 100-member milestone, the largest chapter membership ever recorded for SHPE-SFBA. We continued our plans with a new professional event, Professionals Back to the Classroom, where members learned about SHPE, engineering career development, financial planning and effective communication. As expected, it was a successful event. Members also volunteered to be part of a career panel at Chabot Science Center in Oakland so that high school students could learn that engineerSHPE-SFBA members receive professional ing careers are both cool and interesting. For the development during the Back to the second time during the year, SHPE-SFBA set up its Classroom event. marshmallow and toothpicks structure building booth at the Sally Ride Festival. The chapter also participated in numerous Family Science Nights, serving as Spanish translators and helping elementary school students and their families build science experiments. The chapter has strengthened its network by sharing in the events of other organizations such as the NSHMBA LEAD Conference and SWE’s speaker workshops. We will conclude our fiscal year by participating in regional and local university events. For more information, visit www.sfbayareashpe.org. ¡Gracias! Submitted by Andres Martin, Professional Chapter President ers including Mohammad Noori, dean of the College of Engineering at Cal Poly, and Tammy Martin, a career counselor. All have provided SHPE members with great insight and advice regarding the fields of engineering. We are excited to have various speakers scheduled for the winter quarter, including representatives from Granite Construction and Deloitte Consulting. With 149 members, we have the largest chapter in Region I. Our ACE tutoring program remains strong, and we look forward to helping host the MESA preliminaries at our university. We also are thrilled to embark on a series of industry tours in the upcoming months. We look forward to visiting the Caltrans facility in San Luis Obispo and the Aerojet facility in Sacramento. Additionally, we are ecstatic to be celebrating our 30th anniversary. Thanks to our company sponsors, we have been able to provide workshops, scholarships, outreach programs, incentives and social event opportunities to our members. This year has been very successful for our organization. Submitted by Yuri Carillo Student Chapter Presidential Committee RSR Update I would like to commend my region for the great job it did in 2007. This was demonstrated by the important events held within our region, including Bomba Blast into SHPE, the postNILA regional retreat and the Professional Student Advisory Council meetings. Also, Region I had the most professionals attend the SHPE Conference. If 2007 was that great, I know we have much more in store for 2008. Many chapters participated in Engineers Week in late February so that others in the community heard the SHPE message: engineering is the future. UC Merced will host a conference to promote higher education among 60 ESL students. UC Davis is helping students compete in FIRST Robotics. Cal Poly SLO is joining a MESA event. UNR is hosting a Lego Robotics event for potential engineering students. These are just a few examples of how our region is doing its part to get the whole country motivated about engineering. In addition to outreach, Region I also is known for its huge sports events. In 2007, Cal Poly SLO won the Bomba Cup Soccer Tournament. This year, CSU Chico will host the Sports Fest event and Cal Poly SLO will host the volleyball tournament. Who says engineers are not athletic? Lastly, Sacramento State will host RLDC from April 18-20, 2008, to prepare newly elected officers. Region I is so ready! Submitted by Linda Mercedes Murillo Regional Student Representative Berkeley and Stanford unite after an exciting game for ‘El Machete.’ SSCLES battled for “El Machete.” The event was full of nothing but good, clean fun. Although HES lost “El Machete,” both schools united as SHPE members enjoyed a delicious tailgate barbecue before the Big Game, which was sponsored by Raul Muñoz of IBM. HES would like to thank Raul Muñoz and IBM for their continued support of HES, SSCLES and SHPE. Submitted by Daniella Gutierrez Student Chapter Secretary California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo SHPE-Cal Poly SLO has continued to successfully attract and retain members through the winter session. We have had various guest speakers from a variety of companies, ranging from Anheuser-Busch to PG&E, as well as oth- Stanford University Last year the Stanford Society of Chicano Latino Engineers and Scientists (SSCLES) initiated a Science Buddies partnership with an oncampus tutoring program. This year, SSCLES has branched outside of campus. Members will be partnering with the 3rd Street Community Center in San Jose to mentor students in grades five through eight in preparation for the Tech Challenge Competition. We hope to promote an excitement for learning. We also will work with fellow engineering students at local universities and professionals from the Bay Area. One of our newest projects is a spring break service-learning trip. Stanford offers several trips SHPE R Spring 2008 University of California, Berkeley The annual El Juego Grande flag football championship game between the Hispanic Engineers and Scientists at UC Berkeley and Society of Chicano and Latino Engineers and Scientists at Stanford University took place at Stanford in December. In comparison to the Big Game rivalry between Berkeley and Stanford, in which the winner guards the coveted Axe, HES and SHPE-Cal Poly SLO welcomes members who are first generation college students. 50 http://www.sfbayareashpe.org
