SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 52) REGIONAL ROUNDUP University of California, Merced In its second year as an official club, the Science and Engineering Association (SEA), UC-Merced’s SHPE chapter, continues to strive for big gains. Although SEA has reported significant increases in student participation, now that it has made its mark on the university, it is starting to branch out into the community. This semester, SEA hosted its very first major event. During E-Week, SEA invited ESL students from Atwater High School to the university. They participated in seminars on subjects that ranged from the college application process to financial aid. Professors gave demonstrations and elaborated on science and engineering professions. Students also toured the campus and ate in UC Merced’s dining commons to get a little taste of college life. SEA hopes that the event spread the importance of science, engineering and higher education, giving students an experience that they will hopefully pursue in the future. These students are the future. Let us guide them to a successful path! Submitted by Joseph Ortiz every year, but none of them are focused on science and engineering. This year SSCLES will work with Dr. Robert Marquez and an organization called Casas Del Quinto Sol to build a prototype home. We also hope to do a couple of outreach activities to expose younger students to science and engineering. Of course, we also will be doing fun things like seeing the White Sands National Monument. Our members are very excited. Submitted by Nydia Cardenas Student Chapter President REGION II Arizona T California (Southern) T Hawaii T Nevada (Southern) From the RVP Region II continues to be at the forefront of initiatives that are essential to SHPE’s mission. Our professional chapter leaders have been working with IPC sponsors to develop new programs for attracting more technical professionals to become members. Included among these is the upcoming Professional Development Day event in Phoenix, Arizona, site of the November 2008 SHPE Conference. Our student chapters have also collaborated with professional chapters to host Engineers Week events in Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Phoenix and Tucson. Last year, these events had a great deal of success in reaching out to Hispanic pre-college students and their parents, and we hope to do even better this year. We also are hard at work in organizing this year’s SHPE Conference. Our volunteers have teamed with members from other regions in projects. Since this is the first year that UNR participated in E-Week since the late 1960’s, our chapter has worked hard to keep it an ongoing tradition. We joined with other engineering clubs on campus to host a barbecue every day that week as well as a fun engineering activity. Our goal was to make Lego robots that the non-engineering students could navigate. We then held a tournament, and the winner received a TI-89 graphing calculator. It was as successful as we anticipated, and we hope that everyone had fun planning E-Week activities.
