SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 54) REGIONAL ROUNDUP producing a number of exciting new workshops and events for the conference. This will be sure to attract the attendance of more professionals and students and increase membership across the country as well as in our international chapters. As the premier Hispanic technical conference in the nation, this event will show that SHPE truly is The Source for Quality Hispanic the fields of science and engineering. Each year, about 200 underrepresented minority girls are brought to the UCLA campus, where they engage in workshops and various activities. Past events have included making ice cream with liquid nitrogen, building structures from arbitrary materials and information sessions on financial aid, college applications, student life and housing. Some have also included visits to UCLA’s planetarium and the Visualization Portal, a larger-than-life 3-D simulator. The girls also receive WISE Day T-shirts and goodie bags filled with industry giveaways. They also enjoy lunch with SOLES members who answer questions about college and engineering. The day ends with a competition in which teams design and build egg capsules and test which can withstand the largest impact. Submitted by Raylene C. Greater Phoenix Professional Chapter MESA is a college preparation program that strives to increase the number of ethnic minority, low-income and first-generation collegebound students who are eligible to enter a degree program at a university. As members of MESA, middle and high schools students throughout Southern Arizona participate in hands-on activities related to math, engineering and science. They also attend college preparation workshops that help build strong academic skills and provide information about college and career opportunities. During SHPE-Phoenix’s annual MESA Day, member schools compete to qualify for the national competition. In the On-Site Engineering Design Competition, teams have a specific amount of time to solve a problem with given materials. Just as last year, SHPE-Phoenix will proctor the middle school competition and SHPE-SoAz the high school competition. This year’s SHPE On-Site Engineering Design Competition will be held at the University of Arizona in Tucson on April 5, 2008. Another successful Hispanic Power Networking Mixer, in conjunction with Phoenix NSHMBA, took place in February at a local nightspot. More than 300 Hispanic professionals attended. Thanks to local sponsors, 100 percent of the $5 cover charge went to the organizations for the second time in the three-year partnership. The next mixer will be held on May 15, 2008. Submitted by Jim Diaz Professional Chapter Vice President of Recruitment University of California, Los Angeles Latina engineers comprise about a quarter of UCLA-SOLES membership. As a part of its outreach component, SOLES annually hosts Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Day, which targets underrepresented girls in the Los Angeles area. Planning for this year’s WISE Day is well underway, as SOLES’ Latina leaders have already discussed the most effective methods of exposing young Hispanic girls to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona SHSE-Cal Poly owes its 25 years of success to the support of members. Santa Barbara Professional Chapter In the winter, SHPE-SB held its annual Holiday social at Pepe’s Mexican restaurant to celebrate another successful and productive year. We had a good turnout, with the majority of the SHPE-SB officers attending along with guests. Everyone had the chance to mingle, tell funny stories and eat delicious food. At the end of the night, we managed to collect 44 canned food items such as tuna, soups, vegetables, fruit cocktails and pasta. The food was delivered to the Unity Shop in Santa Barbara that same weekend. A huge thank you goes to everyone who SHPE-SB members participated in a holiday attended and contributed to our food drive. This dinner and food drive. small gesture made the holiday season for some families in our community a little bit more enjoyable. We hope everyone enjoyed the event and that we continue this tradition for years to come. Submitted by Ricky Paredes, Professional Chapter Webmaster and Newsletter Editor It has been an exciting year for SHSE. The success is thanks to its dedicated members. We have had great participation in our carne asada sales and TV tapings, which most recently included “America’s Funniest Videos” in Hollywood. In February, we held our First Annual Freshman Day to encourage freshmen club membership and active participation in the future. The committee members have done an excellent job in planning fun community service events, outreach events and socials throughout the year. We had a successful Breakfast with Industry in which the members interacted one-on-one with engineering professionals. The next big event will be our 25th annual banquet taking place on Friday, April 25, 2008, at the Pomona Valley Mining Company. SHSE continues to be the best club on campus, and it is all thanks to the members.
