SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 55) University of California, San Diego Continuing its efforts to promote young technical talent, SHPE-UCSD will continue to mentor members of its SHPE Jr. Chapter at Kearny Mesa High Educational Complex Construction Tech Academy. This is UCSD’s second year assisting the junior chapter. SHPE Jr. Kearny’s first meeting in December attracted 18 students ranging from the10th through 12th grades. The high school students are excited about this new relationship, which offers access to a world that is unfamiliar to most of them. SHPE Jr. members will benefit academically, personally and financially. It is imperative to help the students understand the struggle ahead. From an academic stance, they must be prepared to work hard to achieve their goals. On a personal level, they must be willing to accept any assistance as well as understand that they are not alone. Also, students must be informed of all available sources of financial aid as well as financial pitfalls to avoid. The success of the SHPE Jr. chapter is attributed to its faculty advisor Omar Garcia, a very passionate teacher who is willing to take that extra step to ensure that his students succeed in life and beyond the classroom. It hosted the Center for Engineering Diversity fall banquet and SHPE academic recognition at Dave & Buster’s restaurant in Arcadia, California. SHPE-USC members were joined by representatives from NSBE, SWE, MAES and Minority Engineers Graduate Association (MEGA) USC chapters. They enjoyed great food and free video arcade game cards and bonded with other minority engineers from the USC campus. The night also included a small ceremony recognizing the SHPE-USC members that obtained GPAs of 3.5 or greater during the fall semester. They received a certificate and a résumé holder to use at the next career fair. Submitted by Cesar Valladares Student Chapter Public Relations Officer RSR Update Greetings Region III! Well, it’s a new year and there is a lot of exciting news. First, Region III had a great showing at the SHPE Conference, with more than 120 students in attendance. We look forward to having even more students in Phoenix. Second, we have two new chapters in our region. The University of Utah (SHPE-UofU) has not been active for several years, but students are currently working very hard to get things in “SHPE shape.” President Enrique Arce is working on getting the chapter involved in national events. Wichita State University is now in the beginning stages of starting a chapter. They have a dedicated advisor who is working to gain student support. We welcome all of you to Region III! Next, the Region III RLDC is going to be hosted by UNM April 4-5, 2008 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
