SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 56) REGIONAL ROUNDUP conference is “Individual Innovation: Reaching Your Peak.” In addition to regional student members, several local high school students will also attend. RLDC questions should be addressed to Benito Herrera at benitoh@unm.edu. As more info becomes available, I will post it on the Region III website, http://oneshpe.shpe.org/wps/portal/region3. The website also contains the Region III events calendar, NPS deadlines and lots of information on upcoming scholarship deadlines. We look forward to using 2008 to make Region III an even greater place to be! Submitted by Samantha Kilroy Regional Student Representative Next year, our goals are to increase membership and community outreach for our small chapter and to attend regional and national SHPE conferences for the first time. A special thanks goes to all the officers who worked very hard to get the chapter restarted. We recruited new members through social activities, professional dinners and high school outreach events. The year started with a couple of socials, including our Halloween movie night. We checked out a theater to watch a scary movie, and all of the girls screamed. Thanks to Jacque Pacheco and Deidre Schoenfeld, we started our outreach program at Kearns High School. We also hosted our first annual professional dinner with a keynote speaker from the human resource department of L-3 Communications. A work readiness seminar enhanced the professional skills of our members, who were also provided with networking opportunities at the Drum Major Awards Luncheon. This remarkable semester started on the right foot: welcoming a new chapter at the U.S. Naval Academy and working hard to start new SHPE Jr. chapters. On the regional level, ETCC in Washington, D.C., focused on academic development, while RLDC at UConn in late March will develop new leaders. My recognition and admiration goes to SHPE-UConn for its outstanding work in making RLDC a great success. In addition, there is a program offered for the development of new SHPE leaders in the region to promote interest in regional and national positions. On the sub regional level, the VRSR team is as active as expected. The Mid Atlantic and Southeast VA sub regions had their second retreat hosted by SHPE-USNA. The PR sub region is organizing PRLDC to develop new local leaders, and it is expecting great improvements over previous years. The Boston sub region is organizing academic and professional workshops. Other events and activities are being scheduled in the Rochester, CT/RI, NYC and NJ sub regions. In closing, Region IV: Say no more! Submitted by Francisco M. Rivera-Hernandez Regional Student Representative Department of Children and Families, a refugee program and the SHPE Jr. Chapter at Hartford Public High School. Giving to the community that needs it the most was a great way to start the holidays. We are starting 2008 preparing for our Third Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Event, a silent auction and date auction. SHPE-CT scholarships are awarded to local high school students who are interested in pursuing STEM degrees. The executive board is working hard to make this event successful and to give an opportunity to young Hispanics – the future of our community. Also, our goal is to embrace our mission of community service, one of SHPE’s four strategic goals. Submitted by Paula Restrepo Professional Chapter Public Relations Chairwoman New York City Professional Chapter SHPE-NYC kicked-off the year with several events. In preparation for tax season, we will host a tax seminar which will be led by a New York State certified public accountant. Other upcoming events include a leadership workshop sponsored by Goldman Sachs, a “SelfBranding” workshop sponsored by PSEG and a peer-to-peer networking event. The chapter has also organized a panel of Consortium alumni who will share with members valuable information related to pursuing an M.B.A., the opportunities made available by this degree and the process of receiving an M.B.A. fellowship. Our members and friends are all looking forward to our second annual ski trip. This event was a huge success last year, and we are expecting this year’s trip to be even better. Please visit www.shpe-nyc.org for the latest information on all events. Submitted by Luis Miranda Professional Chapter Webmaster Colorado School of Mines During the fall semester, SHPE-CSM accomplished numerous goals, more than doubling membership from 30 members last year to nearly 70 this year. This enormous accomplishment was made possible through the dedication of our executive board and active members as well as the sponsorship of various companies. Another accomplishment was having a professional speaker at least once a month during our general meetings. The speakers represented a variety of engineering companies and discussed issues related to engineering life during and after college. We are pleased to announce that next semester our organization will be shifting from bi-weekly to weekly meetings. This speaks to the growth of our chapter and the members’ dedication to improving the Hispanic community. Submitted by Alejandro O. Arceo Student Chapter President Connecticut Professional Chapter In December, SHPE-CT, along with the P&W Hispanic Leadership Forum (HLF), the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA) and NSHMBA, hosted its annual Holiday party and Three Kings Toy Drive event. More than 100 people enjoyed a variety of Hispanic appetizers, dinners and desserts. We collected 86 toys and $852, which were donated to Casa Otonal, the Cornell University SHPE-Cornell hopes to continue the strong recruitment initiative that began last semester. With many new members now attending events regularly, SHPE-Cornell is steadily growing in size and influence. After winning the Small Chapter of the Year Award at the SHPE Conference, SHPE-Cornell is working hard and hopes to compete in the Medium chapter category next year.
