SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 58) REGIONAL ROUNDUP busy the past semester with different activities, events and meetings. Our membership has increased, and we can clearly see this at every meeting, which is attended by a minimum of 30 members. Our members find our organization to be very informative and welcoming. We created a new event, SHE Parents’ Night, as a way to thank our parents for making the effort to send us to college. One of our biggest programs for this semester is Road Trip to SHPE Jr. Chapter, where we will visit different high schools and motivate minority students to pursue a college education. All these events and programs would not be possible if it were not for the commitment of our advisor, executive board and members. Thank you and much success for the spring semester! University of Massachusetts, Lowell To increase funding for chapter activities and conference attendance, SHPE-UML created a new system based on the old idea of a lemonade stand. Pedro Figuera, SHPE-UML’s financial administrator, observed that there were a great number of people coming in early Sunday morning to the school’s recreational center. These people, mostly parents, would just hang around waiting for their kids to finish their activities. He noticed that, besides a vending machine, there was no other place where they could buy snacks. Therefore, the chapter has started a snack bar at the recreational center where it sells coffee, Gatorade, donuts and other snacks. Not only will this simple idea increase the chapter’s profit, but also it has become a great way to increase its teamwork. Volunteers work early Sunday mornings, demonstrating their commitment to the chapter. According to Figuera, the chapter will continue to devise ways in which to increase funds. All of this brings us great pride and motivation. This semester we will host a high school leadership conference and participate in THON (Penn State’s philanthropic dance marathon). These are in addition to our many social and professional development activities which will hopefully help our members grow as students and future leaders of the technological and professional world. University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez What better way to start a new semester than with a paintball revolution, Engineers Week, team building activities and a Regional Science Bowl! These are just some of the activities SHPE-UPRM is bringing to its members. It is also launching a scholarship program for members. This semester, SHPE-UPRM is brimming with energy and enthusiasm for its new marketing agenda. With advertising on plasma TV’s and golf carts throughout campus, our chapter is expanding ways to interact with members and increasing membership to incredible records. At the same time, it gives wider exposure to our loyal sponsors who always help satisfy our membership needs. With a calendar that includes PRLC, Photoshop seminars, golf and basketball tournaments and our annual job fair, we will have a lot to celebrate at our exclusive gala banquet. As the biggest organization on campus, SHPE-UPRM is creating more and better engineers through a friendly and professional environment. Submitted by Wilhelrm Denizard-Ramsamy Student Chapter News Chief Editor Our second annual end of the year banquet was held in December, along with members of SWE and NSBE. Among the 90 attendees were several senior executives from Lockheed Martin. The event consisted of mingling over cocktails, which was followed by dinner and socializing. The presidents of the three organizations were given five minutes to speak to the group about what each organization has accomplished during the year and what they hope to accomplish during the next year. In 2008, we may invite more professional societies such as SME and ASME to join our celebration. In addition, SHPE-LM plans to host more than 60 students for “Si Se Puede,” start a new SHPE Jr. at Western Hills High School and support our two Lego Labs. We also want to send more than 25 members to conferences (including SHPE 2008, RLDC, NILA, MGT and ELI), support our two new SHPE student chapters and increase membership by 20 percent. Last but not least, we want to win the 2008 SHPE Professional Chapter of the Year Award.
