SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 59) high school to college. SHPE-UTPA will once again host Viva Engineering, where local middle school students compete in numerous design competitions. In the past, they have included a catapult design contest, model rocket design contest using ordinary items and a poster competition. We are expecting more schools to attend this year. We will also have an event for elementary schools called “A, B, C de la Ciencia.” It will give elementary students a first glance at the many different aspects of science and engineering. We hope this event will spark interest in science at an early age. The University of Texas at Austin Although there have been many challenges involved with adapting to an entirely new executive board for the 2007-2008 school year, a few basic principles have helped SHPETAMU aspire to Blue Chip merit. Whether they are attempting to solve a problem, write a technical paper or create a carbohydrate molecule out of toothpicks and Styrofoam balls, SHPE members are always willing to help one another – the idea behind SHPE study hours perfected by Elsie Ponce, director of freshman activities. “The purpose of Sunday night study hours is to try to get as many of the upperclassman to help the freshmen and sophomores with their classes,” Ponce said, a sophomore biomedical engineer. “It helps the younger members stay active and meet new people. After all, it is much easier to be less shy in a small environment.” The workload of Secretary Monique Canales involves schedules, meeting agendas and appointments. “My leadership, intrapersonal and organizational skills were put to the test when I became the new SHPE secretary,” said the ocean engineering senior. “As a result, I have become more organized with my schoolwork and an expert in time management.” Treasurer Ramon Silva agrees. “Being an officer basically means having to make sacrifices,” said the mechanical engineering sophomore. “You need to decide what you NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY SHPE-UT Austin members at the Texas Lone Star Showdown Annual Football game against SHPE-TAMU. With a successful fall semester behind us, we look forward to the exciting events planned this semester for our members and the community. Janeth Rodriguez, our community service director, implemented Reach Austin Through SHPE which encourages SHPE members to give back to the community. The number of SHPE-UT Austin members volunteering at community service events has dramatically increased this year. We are excited about making a difference in the Austin community through the many service opportunities we will have this semester. SHPE-UT Austin also is excited about hosting the Sub Regional Outing-South for Region V which will include an evening pizza social and our annual sand volleyball tournament. The winner will advance to the tournament held during RLDC. Our annual SHPE and Salsa social on Saturday night will be one to remember, complete with sizzling fajitas, rice and beans as well as music for SHPE members to show off their moves.
