I The central focus for 2008 will be the OneSHPE 2.0 project. It will improve key functionality by adding access for advisors, a task management tool and more robust reporting functionality. The project will also improve usability and system quality by reducing the number of bugs/defects currently in the system and making it easier for all users. The Website Redesign project will focus on restructuring the national website to ensure that key information can be easily located. Also, WebSphere Portal 5 (the software that runs OneSHPE) will be receiving an upgrade to version 6. This upgrade should make the system more responsive and SHPE Students Compete in L’Oréal Contest SHPE members from Cornell and Rutgers universities participated in the 2008 L’Oréal Ingenius Contest, a four-year-old competition with international scope. The competition targets engineering and supply chain students that are undergraduates, graduates and M.B.A students. This year, students were challenged to diagnose the processes of a L’Oréal plant and propose solutions to further develop sustainable development and productivity through energy efficiency – a core value for the company. Selected student teams from all over the United States spent three days assessing the plant, interviewing operations staff and brainstorming sustainability strategies before presenting their suggestions for energy efficiency. Finalists qualify for the International Competition in Paris, France, in March 2008. “In addition to the educational value of the competition, the L’Oréal Ingenius Contest is a very innovative, real-life opportunity for all participants,” said Dora Maria Abreu, SHPE National secretary. Abreu served as a judge for the competition. For more information, visit www.ingenius.loreal.com. I Don’t Forget to Vote By Jerry Jimenez, Elections Committee Chairman SHPE National will soon hold elections to determine the new members of the National Board of Directors (NBOD) and regional student representatives (RSRs). The NBOD professional positions up for election this year are the national treasurer, national secretary and regional vice presidents for Region II, Region IV and Region VI. Their two-year term of office runs from July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2010. Three student members are also to be elected to the NBOD: the national and vice national undergraduate representatives and the national graduate representative. Seven positions are available for RSRs, one from each region. The one-year term of office for student representatives is from July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2009. For more information, contact Jerry Jimenez, elections chairman, at elections@shpe.org. NOTAR SHPE lifetime member Rudolfo M.Treviño, P.E., a principal mechanical engineer at Raytheon for 30 years, has been selected to the Raytheon Class of 2007 Technical Honors. The Raytheon Technical Honors Program recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves by their technical skills, leadership and contribution to enterprise success. Selection was based on the input of peers, managers and technologists and is now signified by the designation “with Honors” following his title at Raytheon. When she represents her home state at the Miss USA Pageant on April 11, 2008, Miss Washington Michelle Font will also represent SHPE. In March, she completed her B.S. in engineering from the University of Washington, where she served as executive vice president, secretary and president of the SHPE student chapter. In addition to attending SHPE’s National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA) and other engineering career conferences, Font has had two summer internships and has worked full time for a leading airplane manufacturer since 2005. Font hopes that the contest will help her “send the message out to other young women that it is possible to get a degree, have a career and still have fun enjoying life, doing whatever makes them happy.” Rafaela Schwan, AHETEMS director of programs, had the opportunity to fly with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. The exhibition team is well known for performing the graceful aerobatic maneuvers of the four-plane Diamond Formation, in concert with the fastpaced, high-performance maneuvers of its two solo pilots. The experience was filmed by the Navy and shown to SHPE Conference attendees aboard the U.S.S. Iwo Jima. “The opportunity to fly with the Blue Angels and interact with members of the U.S. Navy gives you a deeper appreciation for the commitment and dedication of our men and women in the Armed Forces,” she said.
