SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 60) REGIONAL ROUNDUP have to, want to and need to do.” According to Michael Mendez, ocean engineering senior, being director of internal affairs has helped him gain the ability to handle multiple tasks and communicate with others. “We have all grown used to each other and become more involved in the community through service,” he added. As the school year winds to an end, all of the good times, bad times and adventures that the SHPE board endured created a strong sense of companionship and high hopes for future board members. “This has been my second year in SHPE, and I have grown in confidence and character,” said Oscar Flores, an aerospace engineering sophomore. “With time, the flexibility of the board has allowed me not only to gain more responsibilities but also have a great time along the way.” Submitted by Nancy Garcia Student Chapter Regional Director of External Affairs University of Illinois at Chicago Participating in a holiday food drive was just what SHPE-TTU members needed before finals. SHPE-UIC’s spring semester looks bright as underclassmen prepare to take the lead. nourishing food which the local food bank would distribute to needy local families. In addition to shopping together, SHPE-TTU enjoyed showing its Red Raider pride with red, black and silver decorations. SHPE-TTU hopes to continue this tradition of giving back to the community during the holiday season. The Student Engineering Council (SEC) helps engineers find societies in which to become involved such as SHPE. Every semester, SEC coordinates a career fair for all engineers at Texas A&M. This is the largest student-run career fair in the nation. Last year, they packed Reed Arena and The Zone at Kyle Field. It is no wonder that SHPE-TAMU members have such great opportunities to quickly find jobs. Looking for a job can be exhausting when you have so many options. This emphasizes the importance of knowing what you want in an employer. This spring, SHPE-TAMU looks forward to hearing from experienced engineers the important factors when seeking summer or full-time employment. Workshops and activities will engage attendees to work in teams and generate action plans for overcoming the common difficulties SHPE chapters face. This RLDC is designed to develop not only individual leadership, but also the leadership of entire SHPE chapters. The workshops will enable attendees to improve their leadership through self-awareness. Other activities are designed to address common SHPE chapter issues. Progressing from member development to chapter development will help attendees to receive the greatest benefit from the conference. SHPE-UIUC hopes that all student and professional attendees will leave RLDC with tools and ideas that they can implement in their chapters and in their own personal lives. See you in April! Since our current board is mostly composed of seniors, we will be doing our best to pass on the knowledge we have gained to the chapter’s future leaders. We were lucky enough to have a very active freshman class that has shown an eagerness to help and a willingness to lead. These freshmen, along with the other underclassmen, give us confidence that the chapter’s future is in good hands. SHPE-UIC has a general meeting scheduled each month. Later in the semester, we will host our annual Easter Outreach Activity, one of my personal favorites. Who doesn’t like candy, games, piñatas, egg hunts and a visit from our very own Easter bunny? We will also host our annual High School Expo, where local high school students visit the campus and see presentations from the various engineering fields. Lacks Furniture Store hosted its Trim a Tree Food Drive. SHPE-TTU saw this as an opportunity to do some good for the local Lubbock community.
