SHPE - Spring08 - (Page 61) tutors twice a week at an ESL program held in Ann Arbor libraries. In addition to tutoring more than 20 students, the chapter held a science and engineering workshop for younger students. Various UMich students from different majors led hands-on activities that helped students understand the contributions made by today’s engineers. In December, we adopted Roberto Clemente Elementary School in Detroit. With the cooperation of various university offices and the support of companies, such as Intel and Schlumberger, SHPE-UMich put together more than 250 gift packages for Pre-K to second grade students. The packages included toys, school supplies and winter accessories. More than 20 volunteers spent the morning in classrooms leading craft activities, cookie decorating and story time. The handwritten “thank you” letters we received after the event made it much easier to see the positive impact SHPE left on local the community. At our first meeting, a U.S. Navy speaker informed members of all of the great opportunities available to them through the Navy. Members also were encouraged to attend ETCC in Washington, D.C., in February and RLDC at USF in March. Preceding the Career Showcase, SHPE-UF will host a Barbecue with Industry, during which our members can interact with recruiters in an informal environment. With more 10 corporate attendees, last semester’s barbecue was a success. This year, we expect about 20 different companies to participate. Because SHPE-UF wants to help young engineers excel, it awarded three scholarships to freshmen engineers with good academic standards. The scholarship is funded by hosting a large Goals for Tomorrow Soccer Tournament on campus. The program began four years ago, and it has expanded ever since. Today, even corporate teams are registering to play. We would like to congratulate this year’s scholarship recipients Danielle Soriano, Christine Garcia and Marila Fernandez. Tournament co-directors Alex Vela and Luis A. Vega are already planning the next event. Last year, the Goals for Tomorrow Soccer Tournament won “Event of the Year” within the College of Engineering. This year, we hope to not only reach out to the College of Engineering, but also to local high schools.
