effectively address the academic, leadership and professional needs for our community,” she said. As an engineer, her natural inclination was to lay a solid foundation before building toward that larger goal. Committed to communication and customer service, her first priorities were ensuring financial stability, increasing membership and enhancing services. As a result, SHPE history will record Gomez’s tenure as a time of monumental changes and restructuring, the most signifi- cant (and controversial) of which was moving the national conference to the height of the recruiting season in the fall. “This was a major undertaking and risk that produced the expected results: larger participation from members, corporations, government and educational institutions,” said Enrique Gomez, SHPE Chief Executive Officer. This action was also consistent with Society’s newly adopted mission, to be The Source for Quality Hispanic Engineers and Technical Talent. Appointing a CEO less than a year ago capped a period of stability and denoted a fundamental change in the role of the directors. With operational responsibility shifting to a paid staff, the National Board of Directors (NBOD) was free to assess the Society’s strategic direction and govern through policy setting that ensured the fulfillment of this new mission. Another major milestone of her presidency was establishing the new SHPE Foundation: Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology Engineering Mathematics changes to enhance the Society’s effectiveness and presence within the Latino technical community. 2006-2007 2008-2009 3rd Term 2007-2008 ● With EAC’s advice and support, SHPE decides to hire a CEO. ● Gomez and SHPE leaders join MAES and SACNAS to lobby for increased funding for Latino STEM organizations. ● NBOD sets priorities for Global Expansion Program. ● SHPE restructure is complete as new CEO takes office. ● SHPE hits historic high of 55 professional, 251 student and 28 SHPE Jr. chapters as well as 55 IPC companies. ● SHPE Conference attracts 3,250 participants and 900 pre-college students. ● Gomez featured in first of a 12-book series promoted by AHETEMS. www.SHPE.org ❘ Spring 2009 ● NBOD officially moves the conference to the fall. 15 http://www.SHPE.org
