SHPE - Spring 2009 - (Page 31) PROGRAMS & SERVICES NNSA/Consortium Debuts Internship Program The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) of the U.S. Department of Energy is joining SHPE, the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) and the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) in the NNSA/Consortium Internship Program to provide college students with challenging hands-on educational internship opportunities A separately organized agency within the DOE, NNSA manages and secures the nation’s nuclear weapons, prevents nuclear terrorism and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the United States and abroad. In this, the program’s first year, opportunities will be open to undergraduate and master’s level students. During coming years, the program will be extended to post-doctoral students. Internship locations include Washington, D.C., Texas, New Mexico, California, Nevada and Tennessee. Opportunities to participate include spring, summer and fall periods, and stipends in the amount of $5,000 and above will be offered. For more information, visit www.ahetems.org. Racing for Education Funding ACE Proposal Reminders Advancing Careers in Engineering (ACE) Program mini-grants support the pre-college outreach activities of student, professional and SHPE Jr. chapters. All chapters can receive funding as long as they closely adhere to the ACE Business Plan. Proposals are due on April 15, 2009. Here are just a few last-minute reminders: • Ensure that proposals are correct and complete and that they follow outlined criteria. • Consider all ways to save money. • Have someone else review the proposal. • Triple-check everything to ensure that ALL required documents, signatures (in blue ink only) and information are included prior to submitting the final proposal. Past NSR Anita Ramirez and Ramon Acosta, SHPE-UIC president, sloshed through the 5K Rudolph Ramble as a training run. Last Chance for AHETEMS Scholarship Applications Every year, the AHETEMS Foundation provides scholarships ranging between $1,000 and $3,000 to graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students, graduate students and professionals who demonstrate both significant motivation and aptitude for a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Once again, ExxonMobil, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Verizon, United States Steel Corporation and Kellogg will be offering $5,000 scholarships. The deadline for these scholarships is April 1, 2009. Here are a few things to keep in mind: • U.S. citizenship requirements vary. • The scholarship check is mailed directly to the recipient, not the school. • Students pursuing their first bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or a related field are eligible. • Students must be enrolled full time at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States or Puerto Rico. • High school seniors or undergraduate students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Graduate students must have at least a 3.25 grade point average. • Applying online is easy, and one application opens access to all AHETEMS scholarship opportunities. (www.ahetems.org) • The application only requires a personal statement, transcript and one letter of recommendation. • In some cases, as long as students maintain their GPA and full-time status, they will continue receiving the scholarship. www.SHPE.org ❘ Spring 2009 SHPE members in three cities will be racing to raise funds for the educational programs of their chapters. The idea was started by Anita Ramirez, Past National Student Representative, who has been running for over a year. “I noticed that it is a really good and easy way to raise funds for charity,” she said. “During the SHPE Conference in Phoenix, the AHETEMS staff decided to participate in a race just for fun, but with a little more discussion, we realized that it could be something bigger.” So far, AHETEMS staff members have committed to a race in October. SHPE members at the University of Illinois at Chicago will run a half marathon before NILA 2009. Shortly after the 2009 SHPE Conference, University of Arizona members plan on racing in Tucson. The three participating teams will be supported by AHETEMS, which is providing fundraising documents and matching T-shirts. “We are also planning to document the progress of the AHETEMS crew on the AHETEMS website so that members can check in on us and laugh with us as we struggle to train,” Ramirez added. “At SHPEUIC we have been working on training a team for about a month already, and it really is a lot of fun.” Other chapters interested in joining these efforts or beginning one of their own should contact Rafaela Ornelas-Schwan at rschwan@shpe.org. ■ 31 http://www.ahetems.org http://www.ahetems.org http://www.SHPE.org
