SHPE - Spring 2009 - (Page 41) SHPE CONFERENCE PREVIEW STAR Awards Call for Nominations S HPE National is now accepting nominations for SHPE Technical Achievement and Recognition (STAR) Awards, which will be presented at the 33rd Annual SHPE Conference in Washington, D.C., in October 2009. Candidates can be nominated for more than one award as long as they meet the criterion of each missionary Padre Serra, through his or her innovative accomplishments, leading to the advancement of engineering and science. Two Hispanic in Technology Awards are presented, one in the Corporate sector and another in the Government sector, to an engineer or scientist who has made outstanding contributions in the fields of engineering or science, with sustained contributions in design, production management, education or research. The Student Role Model Award recognizes the unselfish and outstanding contributions of an honoree to his or her SHPE student chapter and the Hispanic community while also maintaining academic excellence. As an active SHPE member, he or she brings honor and esteem to the Society through academic achievement, community service and leadership. The Professional Role Model Award is given in recognition of unselfish and outstanding contributions to a SHPE professional chapter and the Hispanic community, bringing honor and esteem to the Society through community service and leadership. The Corporate Achievement Award is reserved for a corporate executive with five or more years of experience in a technical field; project, budget and department responsibilities; and significant accomplishments in the scientific, technical or engineering arena of a corporation. The Promising Engineer Award honors an engineer with no more than three years of work experience beyond college graduation who is recognized by his or her peers for outstanding technical accomplishments. The Honorary Member Award is presented to one whose accomplishments and extraordinary efforts repeatedly demonstrate a sincere commitment to SHPE’s goals. AHETEMS Awards All nomination materials for the following awards must be received by the AHETEMS Foundation by August 28, 2009. More information about these awards as well as their applications can be found at www.ahetems.org. Two Educator of the Year Awards are presented annually. The K-12 Education Award is presented to a K-12 math or science teacher who has demonstrated a selfless desire to improve the academic and social consciousness of Hispanic students through the balanced use of innovative teaching techniques, culturally cognizant mentorship and leadership integrity. The Higher Education Award is presented to a college or university faculty member or administrator who has demonstrated a concerted effort to increase the graduation rate of Hispanic students in the STEM disciplines. The AHETEMS Academic Excellence and Leadership Award is presented as a college scholarship to qualified Hispanic high school juniors who demonstrate strong academics, leadership experience, service in the Hispanic community and interest in attending college and pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. ■ 41 award. The Jaime Oaxaca Award recognizes the recipient’s unselfish and outstanding contributions in the fields of engineering and science as well as in the community and acknowledges his or her unwavering dedication and commitment to the Society’s advancement. The very nature of the honoree’s activities, carried on continuously over a period of years, brings honor and esteem to the Society. The Company of the Year Award is presented annually to a company or agency demonstrating outstanding support (financial or otherwise) to SHPE and its programs. The company selection is based on the following criteria: significant, measurable and visible assistance to help SHPE meet its goals; promotion of the achievements of Hispanic employees; dedication and commitment to the advancement of the Society’s growth and development; and demonstrated partnerships with public schools that have a high Hispanic enrollment. The Junipero Serra Award is presented by the Society to a person who has provided unique and outstanding contributions in the fields of engineering and science, including management, administration and education.
