SHPE - Spring 2009 - (Page 44) REGIONAL ROUNDUP University of Southern California In early January, SHPE-USC held its annual McCormick and Schmick’s dinner in downtown Los Angeles. It was the first event of the semester for old and new members to come together outside of school and have a good time over great food. Later that month, we had a great turnout for our first general meeting of the semester. Our guest speaker was James Kaplan, an architect from Sun Microsystems. He spoke about Sun’s offerings for data archiving in addition to explaining what the company has to offer today’s engineers. His talk was followed by Hawaiian food and socializing. SHPE-USC’s first events of the semester centered on attracting new engineering students and giving them a taste of what SHPE offers its members. Submitted by Nik Gomez Student Chapter Public Relations Officer Academy of Our Lady of Peace SHPE Jr. This past September, the NBOD approved the Academy of Our Lady of Peace (AOLP) as the 28th SHPE Jr. Chapter. As the first Catholic school chapter in the nation, this is a milestone for AOLP and SHPE. In May the Academy will celebrate its 127th Anniversary of “Educating Her” in San Diego under the guidance of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondolet. Mobilizing the members was easy. I texted friends and talked to them personally. We had 12 members just weeks after school started. The paperwork is intense, but it’s not insurmountable. ATEHEMS, SHPESD and our faculty advisor assisted us tremendously. AOLP SHPE Jr. members were awestruck Twelve of our 22 members were privileged to to meet Jaime Escalante at SHPE 2008. attend the 2008 SHPE Conference. Turntableism and the various seminars, the UA tour and the career fair were all exceptional. However, the Department of Defense dinner featuring Jaime Escalante left us awestruck. His candor and playfulness entertained more than 500 attendees. His infectious zest for math permeated the entire room. We should have packed pencils and paper! The conference inspired us to solidify our mission to meet SHPE objectives and set forth on our ambitious calendar of events. This spring, AOLP SHPE Jr. will be exhibitors at the San Diego Science Festival (SDSF) Expo, the largest of its kind on the West Coast. We also will be assisting in Expanding Your Horizons, an all-girl science and math event for grades six through ten. This will kick off a month-long series of events which will conclude with the Science Festival Expo. Submitted by Annamarie McKellips, SHPE Jr. Chapter President were not only completely engaged in the activities but also asked questions about careers in STEM fields. Many similar volunteer activities have been planned throughout 2009. Our members had a great time at the SHPE Conference and brought back a lot of valuable information to share with the chapter. We learned of several internship opportunities as Santa Ana College SHPE-Santa Ana’s Noche de Ciencia at the local Boys and Girls Club was a success. Our members had a great time helping second to sixth graders with activities that demonstrated what engineers and scientists do.
