SHPE - Spring 2009 - (Page 50) REGIONAL ROUNDUP and another visit to the Austin Food Bank. With this continuous involvement in community service, SHPE’s beacon of light is sure to shine bright for years to come. Submitted by Magdelena Rodriguez Student Chapter Journalist SHPE-Houston’s workshops at a local museum bring engineering to life for children. The University of Texas at Arlington will be working with the staff of the Children’s Museum of Houston to create workshops that demonstrate the joys of engineering and innovation. Members will volunteer to assist at workstations throughout the Museum’s large interactive exhibit, Invention Convention. The workshops will emphasize how certain concepts are used every day by real-life engineers who are SHPE members. Since these projects allow members to include their friends, families and coworkers, they have increased member participation. They have also provided unique opportunities for the chapter to join SHPE-Rice and SHPEUH in assisting the community. Members have also begun attending as corporate groups. SHPE-Houston is excited to see this project expanding and will continue working with the Children’s Museum throughout the year. Submitted by Rubi Medina Professional Chapter President keep SHPE-UIC headed in the right direction. In addition to monthly general meetings, we will continue the tradition of hosting our annual events such as the Easter Outreach Activity and the High School Engineering Expo. These events have become staples in our chapter’s development. We also will be hosting one of the SHPE-Department of Energy Regional Science Bowls. This “Jeopardy”-like tournament will pit high school students from Chicago and its surrounding suburbs against each other for the opportunity to represent Region VI at the National Science Bowl later this year. This event is sure to be very exciting and an absolute success. With all the careful planning and hard work, SHPE-UIC is springing forward into the semester. Submitted by Pedro Valencia Student Chapter External Affairs Chairman SHPE-UTA strives to build leaders, on and off the playing field. University of Texas at Austin SHPE-UTA recently hosted several successful outreach events including the Regional Science Bowl in mid-February and Engineering is Fun during E-Week. Our die-hard athletes have also done their part to get the SHPE name around campus. Both our volleyball and soccer teams made it to the intramural playoffs. We can only hope for even better success with spring intramural sport teams. SHPE-UTA is doing what it can to prepare members that want to pursue leadership roles and improve the chapter in upcoming years. By increasing our attendance at RLDC, we can ensure our progress. Submitted by Rosemary Estrada Missouri University of Science and Technology One of the hardest things for an organization is fundraising. Every year, thousands of people come to Rolla, Missouri, to share in the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, so we decided to take advantage of this great opportunity to make some money. SHPE-MS&T will be selling Krispy Kreme donuts during the 101st Annual St. Pat’s celebration parade. Participating in the most popular campus event can benefit the chapter tremendously by increasing its funding and getting the SHPE name out there toward the goal of expanding our chapter. I am sure that your hard work in this organization will reward you professionally as you begin your careers. I encourage all of you to continue putting forth your best efforts to make your chapters stronger. Also, don’t forget to save the date for RLDC, April 2-5, in Raleigh, North Carolina. We should all do our best to support conference host SHPE-NCSU and keep the remarkable standard set by previous RLDC hosts. I wish you the best in this academic year and hope that you keep developing into the extraordinary leaders of tomorrow.
