This is an exciting time for Latinos in the United States. Latinas represent 60 percent of Latinos in higher education, and we're making tremendous strides in various technical fields. Take Dr. Ellen Ochoa, who is leading innovation at NASA, or our own Diana Gomez, our SHPE Foundation Chairwoman, who was recently promoted to Deputy District Director of Operations, becoming the highest-ranking Latina engineer at Caltrans. I am also proud to be a female chief executive officer heading the largest Hispanic STEM organization in the nation. During the 2011 SHPE Conference, we expanded on our Latina Luncheon by introducing the Latinas in STEM track. Beyond creating more robust opportunities to be inspired and learn from Latina role models, the track was designed to support Latinas in their pursuit of career opportunities in the STEM fields. The idea was for Latinas to come together and support each other toward achieving educational and professional development goals. The speed networking session and the “Collaborating to Build a Smarter Planet” seminar allowed participants to meet and converse with phenomenal Latina engineers, biologists and STEM professionals. I want to thank IBM Corporation and Intel Corporation for their vision and support. More than 800 Latinas attending the conference participated in these exciting programs. Through our SHPE Foundation and exciting programs like Women in Science and Engineering (WISE), we also engage young Latinas and encourage them to choose careers related to science and technology. From middle school through university and well into their career development, Hispanics benefit from the doors SHPE opens to help them advance in their academic and professional endeavors. SHPE continues to be a solution to the growing STEM crisis by supporting Hispanic STEM professionals and investing in America’s future. I am dedicated to our mission of empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to make an impact on the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development. I ask for your continued support so that together, we can realize our vision of changing lives. Pilar Montoya, CEO Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
