In 2008, the stakes are high as student teams prepare their eco-friendly vehicles to drive the farthest distance using the least amount of fuel and break the 1,902.7 miles per gallon record set by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 2007. The 2008 competition will take place April 10-13 at the California Speedway in Fontana, California. Student teams manage their projects from start to finish. From vehicle design to financing, students gain practical experience while applying skills in science, technology, mathematics, business and design. The winning team will receive a grand prize of $10,000 that will be awarded to the team’s educational institution. There are also first-, second- and third-place prizes for vehicles in several fuel categories, including combustion engine, fuel cell/hydrogen and solar. The challenge is open to students from throughout the Americas. William G. Pagan, IBM Corporation; and Rosa Ramos-Kwok, Morgan Stanley. (Pepe) Castillo was recently selected for promotion to Rear Admiral (Lower Half). He currently serves as chief of staff for the Ninth Coast Guard District, which comprises more than 7,000 active duty, reserve and auxiliary men and women of Coast Guard forces on the Great Lakes. In his previous assignment as chief of operations for the Eighth District in New Orleans, he was instrumental in leading the Coast Guard’s efforts to rescue and evacuate more than 33,544 people in New Orleans, as well as along the Mississippi and Alabama coasts, from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Captain Castillo holds a B.S. in management from the Coast Guard Academy as well as a M.S. in industrial relations from the University of New Haven, Connecticut, where he was appointed a Graduate Fellow. He also owns support for any Hedge Fund client related issues escalated from the internal Help Desk. Cordero has been with Morgan Stanley since in 1996. Jorge Ortiz, vice national student representative, was recently honored at the SACNAS National Conference. His research poster, “Floating Modular Hybrid Pier Long Term Test on Fender System,” was selected from more than 450 papers and to receive one of the three awards given in the engineering category. The new Region II Student Representative is Melanie Marin, an industrial engineering senior at Cal Poly Pomona. She plans to attend graduate school and earn a Ph.D. in the field. Her previous leadership responsibilities included membership development chairwoman, co-vice president and later president of the student chapter. Bella Lopez-Nunez recently completed a book on the inspirational life story of her husband, Jorge Manuel Lopez-Nunez, a civil engineer during the turbulent times of the Cuban Communist Revolution. Having worked on the expansion of el Malecón, la Plaza de la Republica (now la Plaza de la Revolución) and a canal in Pinar del Rio (which transformed the peninsula into an island), the Cuban government denied his initial requests to leave the country. In 1962, he managed to relocate to Puerto Rico where he helped construct the San Juan water treatment plant, the Center of University Studies in San German, the largest post office in Hato Ray, “El Townhouse” (the largest building in San Juan at the time) and luxury homes. According to Mrs. Lopez-Nunez, the book, named after her husband, documents his passion for civil engineering and inspires future engineers to follow their dreams.
