SHPE - Winter 2008 - (Page 14) N AT I O N A L A F FA I R S C O M M I T T E E Mastering the EOY Report Is Your Chapter on Point? By Antonina Robles, National Affairs Chairwoman The End of the Year (EOY) Report is a great opportunity for student and professional chapters to showcase what they have done throughout the year. It allows SHPE to learn about a chapter’s activities, budget, executive board, goals and accomplishments (past, present and future). It also serves to preserve the chapter’s history for future generations of leaders. Last, but not least, submitting the report qualifies a chapter to compete for SHPE National Chapter of the Year Awards. Here are a few tips to complete a perfect EOY report. 1. Follow the guidelines. 2. Meet the deadline: April 15, 2008. 3. Complete Continuous Feedback Forms (CFF) accurately for all five categories: a. Professional Development (i.e., company tours, professional guest speakers, speaker series) b. Leadership Development (i.e., RLDC host, NILA attendance, executive board transition retreat) c. Chapter Development (i.e., BBQ, retreats, fundraisers) d. Academic Development* (i.e., GPA competitions, tutoring, freshmen mentors) e. Outreach/Community Service (i.e., high school visits, E-week, volunteering at university or community events) 4. Provide an events calendar, chapter history and continuity of programs. 5. Provide a list of viable and attainable goals. 6. Provide a summary of accomplishments and achieved goals. 7. Ensure professional presentation by reviewing style and checking spelling/grammar. 8. Provide a conclusion. 9. Don’t exceed the 50-page limit. Submitting the EOY report has never been easier. Simply log in to OneSHPE and click on “Chapter Tools.” After selecting the university, select report and click submit. For more information, contact Antonina Robles, NAC chairwoman, at nac@shpe.org. * Applies to student chapters only By Hector R. Herrera Jr., National Affairs Co-chairman and NPS Chairman The National Point System (NPS) encourages chapter involvement in activities that SHPE National considers important for all chapters to do. The program also provides opportunities for members to grow their participation and contribute to their chapter’s success. Chapters that meet 95 percent of NPS criteria achieve “National Blue Chip” status, while those meeting 90 percent obtain “National Five Star” status. It’s great to see NPS participation from the student and professional chapters in different regions. It’s very impressive to see the coordination among chapters to ensure that they are staying on point to become Five Star and Blue Chip chapters. Please remember NPS deadlines: January CFFs and Event for January’s Chapter Development Month and the spring calendar of events are due February 15, 2008. Also, when you e-mail nps@shpe.org to claim your points, please include your chapter name and an itemized list of what you are submitting. Thank you to the participating chapters, good luck and please e-mail me if you have any questions. Academic Excellence Rewarded By Barry Cordero, National Affairs Co-chairman, GPA Rewards Chairman The GPA Rewards program recognizes chapters that implement strategic planning and effective programs to improve their chapters’ GPAs. In each region, members of the top three chapters improving their GPAs by the largest margin (over the course of a year) will receive registration discounts of 30, 15 and 10 percent for the 2008 SHPE Conference. Also, members with GPAs of 3.7 or above will be rewarded with additional professional benefits. We’re working with the NBOD in exploring the possibility of guaranteeing interviews, lunch with a CEO and similar opportunities for these students. We will keep you updated as these rewards are determined. The program’s success depends on cooperation between the chapter’s members and advisor. At the beginning of each term, each member provides his or her GPA to the chapter advisor, and chapter leaders submit a strategic plan that outlines how they will increase the GPAs of their members, and in turn that of their chapter. The advisor records individual GPAs by student ID number on a spreadsheet and submits the chapter’s average GPA to the National Affairs Committee (NAC). That process is repeated at the end of the term and at the end of a year. Chapters with the greatest improvement are honored.
