SHPE - Winter 2008 - (Page 4) PRESIDENT’S LETTER NATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Diana L. Treasurer Annette Jimenez T IRS Headquarters (Retired) National Undergraduate Representative Allan Luis Morales T University of South Florida Vice National Undergraduate Representative Jorge R. Ortiz T University of California, San Diego National Graduate Representative Victor Cervantes T University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign A s engineers, we are intent on building the future. As Hispanics, our culture teaches us not to tout our accomplish- ments. Yet, as a Hispanic engineer, I can’t help but herald the success of the SHPE Conference held two months ago. It is the best example of what SHPE has to offer and brings clarity to our mission. True, we always leave the conference feeling revitalized and refreshed, a result of networking with our nation’s best and brightest. However, the repercussions go so far beyond that. Bringing our conference into the fall timeframe had the dual purpose of serving corporate partners with top-notch talent during the height of the recruiting season as well as giving members an edge in the increasingly competitive global job market. In both respects, we accomplished what we set out to do. Let me give you a few examples. Reyeq Badran Saffarini, from la Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Bayamón, had five interviews lined up before the conference. By the end of the career fair, he had landed another five interviews…that’s 10 interviews in two days! He left Philadelphia with two employment offers. Oral Roberts University reported chapter-wide success. President Rosa Rivas said most of the 10 students ORU sent to the conference had at least one interview by conference end, and many left with job offers pending. Our corporate partners, too, met with positive recruitment results. Strengthened by its timing at the peak of the recruitment cycle, the national conference generated a larger number of recruiters than any other SHPE Conference – more than 1,700 – and they interacted with the largest membership attendance in our history. As a result, they were able to get to know greater numbers of candidates. Representatives from Boeing conducted well over 250 interviews and awarded nearly 100 letters of intent! Over and over, recruiters commented on the number of high caliber students who, during the winter timeframe, have already been hired. I share these compliments with you, SHPE’s members, because without your good preparation, earnest support and enthusiastic attendance, none of this would have been possible. At SHPE, we will continue to transform lives through education and career opportunities. We will continue to bring together all stakeholders in the challenge for a better America. Now, more than ever, we’re able to provide our members with new levels of service. After all, we believe that if you transform enough lives, you can transform an entire culture. Make no mistake: careers in engineering or math or science have the ability to do just that.
