SHPE - Winter 2008 - (Page 43) STAR Awards Que Sigan Adelante SHPE’s Professional Chapter Adelante Awards were based on End-of-Year Reports that were submitted by every professional chapter. The National Board of Directors evaluated each report based on member participation and programs within the strategic areas of organizational development, professional development, community outreach and education. In addition to rating each chapter for its cooperation with local student chapters, its programs were also assessed for nominations as “Best Practice Programs.” When compared to chapters of similar size, the 2006-2007 winners received the best overall scores. National winners received $1,500 awards with regional winners each receiving $700. Fresno Professional Chapter Small Chapter (Less than 30 members) SHPE-Fresno’s programs satisfy the diverse interests of its members, which range from general meetings related to financial planning to networking at family bowling nights. Many members also hold leadership positions on the local, regional and national SHPE committees. Among its various K-12 and college outreach activities, SHPE-Fresno held its Summer Engineering Academy, a tradition since the chapter’s inception. The two-week program at Fresno State enhances the critical academic skills that give students a better understanding of engineering majors and the challenges of a college prep program. Similarly, the goal of SHPE-Fresno’s high school visitation program is to increase the number of students pursuing STEM degrees and careers them with vital information on college preparation, hands-on engineering activities and inspirational role models. For college students, SHPE-Fresno hosts a Scholarship Boot Camp to help them identify and apply Professional Chapters of the Year Fresno (Small) Lockheed Martin Aeronautics (Large) Most Improved Washington, D.C. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Professional Chapter Large Chapter (30+ members) Since 2003, SHPE-LM has established a solid reputation of giving back to the Fort Worth Hispanic community. From its inception, the chapter has participated in career days, mentoring and networking activities. Today, SHPE-LM continues to focus on professional development and community outreach. Last year the chapter helped raised $19,000 for the Hispanic College Fund Golf Tournament, started a SHPE Jr. chapter, restarted a Lego Lab and sent 21 members to professional development workshops. SHPE-LM members work hard to fulfill its mission, to “provide the community of Fort Worth with the best professional leaders and engineers.” Joseph Lane Kirkland, American labor union leader and past president of the AFL-CIO, once said, “Don’t believe that winning is really everything. It’s more important to stand for something. If you don’t stand for something, what did you win?” SHPE-LM proudly takes a stand in helping the Society make a difference. “The best thing of all,” said Neftali Ortiz, SHPE-LM president, “we are just getting started, and this year we will be doing even better.” Erik M.
