SHPE - Winter 2008 - (Page 44) CONFERENCE 2007 Academic Olympiad With questions that ranged anywhere from multidisciplinary science and engineering theories and complex math equations to SHPE trivia, the “Jeopardy”- style Academic Olympiad put each region’s technical knowledge and teamwork ability to the ultimate test. All student chapters with more than 10 attendees were required to take the preliminary written exam from which seven teams (one from each region) receiving top marks advanced to the final round. During the Academic Olympiad Game Show, teams had mere seconds to answer questions accurately, because incorrect answers were penalized with point deductions. After two rounds of increasing value, only the teams with positive scores could wager toward being crowned this year’s champion Olympiad sponsors Lehman Brothers and NASA awarded each member of the first and second place teams with $1,000 and $750 scholarships, respectively, while third place winners received $500 scholarships.
