SHPE - Winter 2008 - (Page 46) CONFERENCE 2007 AHETEMS Design Competition The winners of this year’s AHETEMS Design Competition not only proved that a successful idea need not be expensive to design and build, but also that the process stimulates a creative, intellectual and entrepreneurial spirit; develops technical presentation skills; engenders a team spirit; and instills the cooperation essential in a design project. The designs centered on an aeronautics/ aerospace theme, and while they could not duplicate existing commercial products, they could offer improvements to them. Prior to oral presentations at the conference, the teams submitted a concept paper that technically explained and graphically illustrated the design in great detail. They also had to provide developmental/production cost analysis. A panel of engineering professionals from industry, government and academe selected team finalists from the pool of qualified entries. Sponsors Intel Corporation and National Science Foundation awarded first and second place teams with $3,000 and $2,500 scholarships and a $2,000 to the third-place team.
