SHPE - Winter 2008 - (Page 67) California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo The SHPE Conference opened up many opportunities for SHPE-Cal Poly SLO members. Several members were offered full-time employment as well as internships. They also participated in the GRE/GRAD Lab and Academic Olympiad. Thanks to support from Mohammad Noori, dean of the College of Engineering, we reimbursed nearly all of our member’s registration fees. We were named 2006-2007 Region I Outstanding Chapter of the Year as well as Region I Chapter of the Month for September 2007 and won the annual Region I Bomba Cup soccer tournament. Furthermore, we have appointed a graduate student representative to increase involvement among current grad students and encourage more undergraduates to pursue advanced degrees. Our successes so far had made our membership more involved and active. With more than 140 members, our chapter has made an impact on the surrounding communities. We work closely with MESA and frequently organize tours and panels discussions for visiting students. Currently, we are working with Atascadero and Paso Robles High School to establish a SHPE Jr. chapter. We also organized the annual ACE gift drive where we provided elementary school students with tutoring as Christmas presents. Overall, we are excited about our programs as well as accomplishing our goals and aiding Region I and SHPE National in accomplishing their goals. Submitted by David Sequeira Student Chapter President received third place in the graduate competition. Congratulations go to them for their hard work. Ten students from UNR, or more than two-thirds of its membership, attended the conference. We take pride in giving our members opportunities to achieve their goals, and it shows with the number of people we sent to the conference. Hopefully, we can improve this number as our chapter continues to grow. Submitted by Brandon Williams Student Chapter President buildings and an array of urban residential options. Another successful Hispanic Power Networking Mixer, in conjunction with Phoenix NSHMBA, took place in the fall at a local nightspot. More than 300 Hispanic professionals attended, and thanks to local sponsors, 100 percent of the $5 cover charge went to the organizations for the first time in the three-year partnership. The next mixer will be held February 7, 2008.
