SHPE - Winter 2008 - (Page 69) CSULA students. The money generated from the event funded SHPE-USC’s Youth Conference in December. SHPE-USC’s fall retreat took place at Six Flags Magic Mountain where members took a break from school work to enjoy some amazing thrill rides. Finally, SHPE-USC’s end-ofyear banquet was held at Dave & Busters. Submitted by Cesar Valladares Student Chapter Public Relations San Diego State University launched air powered rockets and programmed small robots. They were also motivated to pursue engineering by guest speaker Steven Carrillo, SHPE-SD vice president. Also, the kids received graphing and scientific calculators from Mike Cruz, our SHPE campus professional. The collaboration of the Robotics, Chemistry and Pre-Health clubs at SWC was key to the success of this event. Thanks to the financial support from AHETEMS, SHPE-SWC is already planning for Science and Engineering Day at Granger Junior High School. Submitted by Luis A. Leon Student Chapter President community service projects, please contact us. Lastly, I hope that all chapters are having great success in all their endeavors. If SHPECSM can help with anything, please feel free to contact us. I hope that every chapter extends the same generosity so we can all work together for the betterment of the community. Submitted by Sean Driscoll University of Colorado at Boulder SHPE-CU-Boulder is proud to be stronger and more active than ever. This year, more than half of our chapter attended the SHPE Conference. It was great to meet members from different chapters and regions. We are making great progress as a chapter, with many outreach and career development events. This spring, we are proud to host the first annual Region III SHPE banquet, where we will recognize chapters who have shown exceptional growth and individuals who have demonstrated academic excellence and made great contributions to their chapters. We look forward to a successful year and hope to again see everyone at next year’s conference. Boise Professional Chapter In November, we held a meeting to revive SHPE-Boise. Most professionals in attendance were Hewlett-Packard employees. The goal is to attract other professionals from Micron, CH2Hill, BLM and other engineering firms. The meeting generated a lot of enthusiasm to have SHPE reinstated and marked the beginning of what promises to be a great chapter. Elections were held in late November and the kick-off event in December. We expect to have about 40 members, but in the meantime we have a lot of planning to do in order to establish a strong foundation for the revived chapter. SHPE-Boise will work on starting a SHPE Jr. chapter which will be the first one in Idaho. We also discussed events related to professional, leadership and chapter development as well as outreach. SHPE-Boise is back and ready to get a lot done! Crack, crack, snap, YEAH! This sound was repeated over and over during SHPE-SDSU’s outreach event with the Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI). After spending a week learning about bridge building, the BLCI students used Pontifex software to design a bridge. The program enabled the students to design and modify a bridge capable of passing today’s safety and industry standards. The students then used spaghetti to construct the bridge they designed. At the end of the week, the students came to SDSU where they received a tour of the engineering building and tested their spaghetti bridges. The team whose bridge held the most weight won the grand prize, an MP3 player for each team member. SHPE-SDSU has conducted this event for the past six years. It is one of many successful events that it hosts. This outreach program is designed to encourage students to think about pursuing degrees in the science and engineering fields. After all, they are the leaders of tomorrow. Submitted by Antonina Robles Professional Chapter Interim President Colorado School of Mines This year, SHPE-CSM has been driven to provide as many opportunities to its members and the Hispanic community as possible. As such, it has increased the number of professional speakers at meetings by 500 percent and introduced the opportunity for company tours. Additionally, it is developing vast community service projects with the local Hispanic population in Denver. If any other chapter would like to get involved or know more about the Sub regional events unify Region IV iguanas. Southwestern College In the fall, SHPE-SWC hosted its Science and Engineering Day at National City Middle School. In the past six years, it has annually hosted the event during the spring at Granger Junior High School. Thanks to past experience, this event was a complete success. The 80 participants enjoyed a series of hands-on workshops related to physics, chemistry, robotics and health. The students www.SHPE.org R Winter 2008 As Region VI iguanas aim for a great ETCC in D.C. and an outstanding RLDC at UConn, they demonstrate how to make a difference. Recently, P&G initiated a partnership to host workshops at NJIT and Drexel, and SHPE-NYC implemented PDS and workshops to benefit local chapters. Thanks go to the hosts of the sub regional at UConn, SIT, UMD and Polytechnic University. Region IV 69 http://www.SHPE.org
