A $10,000 first-place check was awarded to ATX Corp. “It was a close competition,” said judge Mel Mitchell, Talent Development Consultant with Microsoft. “ATX did an excellent job of creating a well thought out business plan. During their presentation, they outlined their research on the business issue and how their solution may help an organization successfully create and implement an internal social network using Microsoft products.” Second and third place went to SHPE-San Francisco’s Enterprise Solutions and SHPE-Sacramento. AHETEMS introduced various new components to the SHPE Conference, including the Deans’ Summit. The 15 participating deans listened to presentations from distinguished speakers including Adam Chavarria, White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanic Americans; Dr. Irving McPhail of NACME; Dr. Carlos Rodriguez of the American Institutes for Research; and Garie Fordyce of the NSF. An executive www.SHPE.org ❘ Winter 2009 EXECUTIVES ON CALL SHPE was honored to have industry executives contribute their valuable experience in various aspects of the 2008 SHPE Conference. Professionals interested in earning an MBA received valuable insight from an executive panel that included Jeet Bindra, President, Global Manufacturing, Chevron; Calline Sanchez, Director, Systems Technology Group, IBM; Juan Cruz, Vice President, Operations, ITT Corporation; and Edwin Garcia, Vice President, Strategy and Portfolio Management Office, Kimberly-Clark. “It was informative, thought-provoking and, most importantly, very interactive,” said moderator and SHPE CEO Enrique Gomez. “This was an indication of the audience’s level of interest in and the quality of their responses.” Another Executive Panel met in a closed session to explore the qualities of the renaissance engineer, how these qualities should be developed, why individuals and businesses should invest in this effort and how industry and SHPE can unite to create them. Its findings will be featured in a future issue of SHPE magazine. committee was charged with drafting an action plan that SHPE and individual science/engineering institutions can follow in order to attract, retain and mentor Latino students. Whether the session focused on circuits, molecules or Mars, each included hands-on activities for teachers to bring engineering and science to life for their students. “The Design Squad workshop was presented in a way to get non-technical oriented teachers engaged and ready to present engineering activities in the classroom,” noted Mary Ann Soto Ekstrom. “With the printed materials, web links to videos and other resources they provided, there were enough lessons for engaging an engineering class or science club.” (Photo Educator of the Year Clara Velez (second from left) collaborated with participants of SHPE’s first Teacher Program.) More than two dozen student chapter advisors participated in four distinct sessions. Professional chapter presidents joined one session to explore ways to increase student-professional interactions via shadow days and science fairs. Fundraising best practices were also shared. UCLA’s Enrique Ainsworth summarized the critical role advisors have in developing tomorrow’s leaders. At UCLA, “We build engineering students from their very first encounters as freshmen,” he said. “We put them into labs so that they are involved in 25 Ken Krehbiel Ken Krehbiel Ken Krehbiel http://www.SHPE.org
