All student chapters with more than 10 attendees were required to take the preliminary written exam from which seven teams (one from each region) receiving top marks advanced to the final round. During the Game Show portion of the Olympiad, teams had mere seconds to answer questions accurately because incorrect answers were penalized. Although teams with negative point values were not permitted to advance to the following round, Guitar Hero intermissions kept spirits high and thunder sticks roaring. 32 Sponsors NASA and the Department of Energy awarded each member of the first place team with $1,000, and second and third place team members received $750 and $500, respectively. ■ First Place Region I University of California, Berkeley Tristan Fletcher, Romina Rodriguez, Mayra Chavolla and alternate Jesus Tapia (not pictured) (left to right) Judges representing the Academic Olympiad’s sponsors included NASA’s Olga D.
