SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 34) CONFERENCE 2008 AHETEMS Design Competition Sponsored by NASA, this year’s designs centered on a lunar surface system that could be employed during the return to the moon and construction of or dwelling in a lunar outpost to conduct research and prepare for future missions to Mars and beyond. While teams could not duplicate existing commercial products, they could offer improvements to them. In addition to product design and fabrication, teams also submitted technical papers to articulate their critical design rationale and process as well as proposed or actual design testing and evaluation. They were also encouraged to include detailed illustrations of the dimensions, scale, 3-D views of the design and a developmental/production cost analysis. Design abstracts were featured in the Conference 2008 issue of SHPE magazine. Each finalist team received $1,000 to develop its design, and each member received a $100 registration waiver and a $100 travel stipend. The first place team received $3,000 and, if it pursues developing a patent, an additional $5,000. Second and third place teams received $2,500 and $2,000 respectively. ■ First Place California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo “StirTech” Victor M. An all-time record of 165 students applied, but only 80 were accepted. With eight sponsored teams, students proudly rallied alongside their corporate mentors and sported company T-shirts. Their mission was to build a pump system that could be implemented in an impoverished area. The prototypes had to pump water from a high source to an area three feet away. Teams also had to explain and show an adaptable filtration system. Using supplied resources, and/or improvising their own, they had to out-design, outdevelop and out-promote their competition, and all within 24 hours. Intel’s Orange Team placed first with team members Derick Johnson, Richard Linares, Rehan Momim, David Weil, Albert Besse, James Crawford, Maria Mendez, Alice Muna, Eric Padilla and Diana Olvera each receiving $400. Although teamwork was key to overcoming obstacles, five team leaders were awarded scholarships, including Crawford, Ricardo Villarreal, Everardo Tapia and Patrick Candelaria who each received $1,000 scholarships, and Linares who received a $2,000 scholarship. “The tiredness I felt for not sleeping an entire day does not compare to the satisfaction I had to see our model work,” said Jeremy Morales Madrigal of Cañada College. “I am proud of my team and thankful to those who put this challenge together to make us realize what we are capable of doing when we put our minds and souls into a project. I loved it!” ■ XEC founders/chairmen Sam Attaguille and Cesar Gonzalez sport extreme neckware. The winning Orange Team (Intel) and 2008 Extreme Engineering Scholars.
