SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 37) engaging more alumni, expanding our outreach, obtaining research and internship positions and, most importantly, excelling in academics. SHPE-UIUC also earned the honor of Outstanding Society of the Year, an award given to the Illinois engineering society that best promotes engineering leadership among its members and fellow societies. The most rewarding part was seeing the immense development of members and growth in nearly every aspect of our organization. We are all honored and grateful to have been recognized as Chapter of the Year. ■ 2007-2008 National Chapters of the Year University of Virginia (Small Chapter) Arizona State University (Medium Chapter) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Large Chapter) Regional Chapters of the Year I California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo II Arizona State University III University of New Mexico IV University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez V Rice University VI University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign VII University of Florida Most Improved Chapter Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico Category Winners University of California, Davis Academic Development University of Washington Chapter Development University of South Florida Leadership Development University of Texas at Austin Outreach and Community Service University of California, Berkeley Professional Development New Student Chapters Wichita State University University of Alabama College of the Sequoias University of Utah University of Massachusetts Dartmouth University of Idaho U.S. Naval Academy (clockwise from top left) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; University of Virginia; Arizona State University; NAC Chairwoman Antonina Robles (far right) with members representing category award winners: PUPR’s Valerie Graxirena Rivera, USF’s Manuel Bravo, UC Berkeley’s Sara Valdez, UW’s Jonathan Santiago, UTA’s Stephanie Orci and UC Davis’ Karla Lanzas. Arizona State University Medium Chapter (26-50 members) By Luz Osuna, President With the ambitious goal of winning a SHPE National award, during 2007-2008 SHPE-ASU emphasized chapter innovation and academic excellence and increased community involvement. SHPE-ASU was not only able to accomplish its goals but went above and beyond expectations. For example, it hosted the Region II Leadership Development Conference which included rigorous case studies focused on chapter and leadership development. Toward strengthening member participation and the familia bond, SHPE-ASU held SHPE’s and Salsa networking mixers and participated in intramural flag football. Professional development workshops, cohosted with the Society of Women Engineers, increased our members’ confidence with regard to their résumés, interviewing skills and networking skills. SHPE Studies, weekly study groups for SHPE members, was also established to help improve the chapter’s overall GPA, which has gone from a 2.9 to a 3.1 on a 4.0 scale. SHPE-ASU joined forces with various www.SHPE.org ❘ Winter 2009 Phoenix nonprofits such as Together We Paint to repair and clean homes for the elderly and low-income families. Finally, SHPE-ASU mentored the Tolleson SHPE Jr. chapter during the FIRST Robotics Competition. The team went on to compete at the semifinals. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Large Chapter (50+ members) By Miguel Guerra, President This year was marked by growth, exciting new initiatives and milestones. SHPEUIUC’s objective was to make an impact in the College of Engineering by exceeding academic expectations, creating new programs for the recruitment and retention of Hispanics in engineering, developing strong leaders of the future and becoming more involved in decisions within the college. Our chapter was able to identify the issues that Hispanics face in engineering at Illinois and make significant progress in addressing them. We excelled as a chapter by developing the first ever Pre-College Conference, hosting the Region VI Leadership Development Conference, recruiting the largest freshman class ever, 37 http://www.SHPE.org
