SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 44) PROGRAMS & SERVICES Upgrade Your ACE Proposal Advancing Careers in Engineering (ACE) Program mini-grants support the pre-college outreach activities of student, professional and SHPE Jr. chapters. Such activities encourage students to complete high school, enroll in four-year universities and pursue STEM degrees and careers. The success of a chapter’s ACE proposal is determined by how much time and effort is put into it. All chapters can receive funding if members collaborate and closely adhere to the ACE Business Plan, which includes all necessary steps and forms. Please contact the AHETEMS office with any questions. You can upgrade your proposal by considering the following tips: • Ensure that proposals are correct and complete and that they follow outlined criteria. Missing or incorrect information may result • • • • in disqualification or point deductions from each reviewer in the committee. Consider all ways to save money. Obtain giveaways from the university/companies. Ask the university for in-kind copies of program handouts. Detail contributions from other organizations including volunteer time, use of office equipment and office space if the chapter is not paying for it. Contact host institution/company to obtain free/reduced cost facilities and equipment. Have someone else review the proposal. Proposals may be submitted early to the AHETEMS office for suggested changes that will increase the likelihood of funding. Triple-check everything to ensure that ALL required documents, signatures (in blue ink only) and information are included prior to submitting the final proposal. Submit by April 15. Apply Now for Scholarships Each year, NASA awards 100 undergraduate students in STEM with Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST) scholarships. The program provides a renewable one-year competitive scholarship covering up to one-half of tuition and fees (not to exceed $10,000) and a paid summer internship. Scholars also benefit from the MUST Professional and Academic Support System (PASS) for professional development and leadership training as well as invaluable resources, insight and experience in furthering their STEM education and career aspirations from members of the MUST Consortium, SHPE, the Hispanic College Fund and the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation. The deadline for the 2009-2010 cycle is February 2, 2009. To review eligibility requirements and apply online, visit www.nasa.gov/education/must. Time is running out to apply for meritand need-based scholarships and internships. Every year, the AHETEMS Foundation provides scholarships ranging between $1,000 and $3,000 to high school graduating seniors, undergraduate students, graduate students and professionals who demonstrate both significant motivation and aptitude for careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Once again, ExxonMobil, Northrop Grumman Corporation, Verizon, United States Steel Corporation and Kellogg will be offering $5,000 scholarships. The deadline for these scholarships is April 1, 2009. The deadlines for internship opportunities with NNSA Consortium Internship Program, FreeportMcMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., CDM and NASA Marshall are February 1, 2009. Here are a few things to keep in mind: • High school seniors or undergraduate students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Graduate students must have at least a 3.25 grade point average. • Applying online is easy, and one application opens access to all AHETEMS scholarship opportunities. (www.ahetems.org) • The application only requires a personal statement, transcript and one letter of recommendation. • In some cases, as long as students maintain their GPA and full-time status, they will continue receiving the scholarship. ■ SHPE ❘ Winter 2009 SHPE/DOE Partner for Nine Regional Science Bowls To encourage excellence in math and science, SHPE has once again partnered with the Department of Energy to bring the Regional Science Bowls to communities across the nation. By raising the visibility of academic achievement in math and science, the program places coverage of young students on par with that of young athletes. The SHPE Regional Science Bowls engage middle and high school students in an enriching, challenging and competitive environment to heighten their interest in math and science. The winning team and coach from the SHPE Regional Science Bowls receive an invitation and all-expenses-paid trip to compete at the DOE National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.
