With more than 1,000 members, we have grown more than 30 percent in comparison to last year, and we still have more than 200 free memberships left to offer. UC Berkeley claimed the gold for our region in the Academic Olympiad and several members placed in the Technical Paper and Poster Competitions. Region I also swept the AHETEMS Design Competition. Congratulations to Cal Poly SLO, the 2007-2008 Region I Chapter of the Year, and to the three Region I chapters that received category awards: UC Berkeley, UC Davis and UW. Congratulations also to September Chapter of the Month UC Berkeley as well as October Chapters of the Month Sac State and Bakersfield. All are invited to RLDC at UC Merced on March 20-22, 2009. Sanchez, Luis Dominguez, Llanet Gomez, Robert Peralta, Jaime Salazar and Oscar Vargas worked on StirTech, a selfsustainable, renewable energy source to aid the civilization on the moon. The second place team of Armando Lagunas, Ricardo David Garcia, Veronica Cuevas, Manuel Velasco, Rolando Rodriguez, Jeovany Vega and Oscar Luis Vargas Orozco worked on the Lunar Emergency Protective Shelter which provides immediate and temporary protection from hazardous moon conditions. Our SHPE chapter also received the Outstanding Membership Award and the Outstanding Chapter of the Year Award for Region I. Members experienced networking with various company representatives and members from other chapters. It has energized our chapter, and members are already looking forward to the next conference in Washington, D.C. Submitted by Jaime O. Sanchez SHPE-SFBA and SHPE-SV professionals helped students prepare for conference interviews. University of California, Berkeley San Francisco Bay Area Professional Chapter SHPE-SFBA has diligently promoted professional development, community outreach and education. We have participated in multiple business mixers with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, NSHMBA, SWE and MuyBueno.net. Also SHPE-SFBA members learned more about LEED certification and toured the Bay 48 Bridge, the biggest construction site in northern California. During the fall, SHPE Day at the Exploratorium attracted more than 300 people. The Sally Ride Festival at NASA Ames once again encouraged young middle school girls to showcase their creativity and future engineering potential. We participated in four family science nights, introducing young children and their parents to the wonderful world of science and technology. In preparation for the SHPE Conference, more than 120 students participated in Bomba Blast at Apple Headquarters in Cupertino, California. There, 30 professionals from SHPE-SFBA and SHPE-SV helped the students with their résumés and interviewing skills. Also, four of our 20 professionals attending the SHPE Conference became lifetime members, helping Region I lead the nation. SHPE-SFBA is ready to continue its mission of inspiring future engineers and giving back to the community. ¡Feliz año 2009! Submitted by Andres Martin, Professional Chapter President, and Luis Miguel Soria, Education Coordinator SHPE-UC Berkeley’s YES Day participants gained a deeper understanding of engineering. California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo With 77 members attending the SHPE Conference SHPE-Cal Poly SLO had two SHPE-UC Berkeley’s annual high school conference, YES Day, was a huge success as 21 local high school students gained a deeper understanding of engineering. An introduction to various engineering majors was followed by two student panels and two college workshops led by SHPE members. Everyone also toured the plasma reactor and nuclear reactor laboratories. The program also included a cantilever design competition and ice cream making with liquid nitrogen. This event was a huge success for SHPE-UC Berkeley not only because it had high member participation, but also because many of the high school students mentioned their desire to become engineers. It also served as a stepping stone in developing a SHPE Jr. chapter and a more robust alumni network.
