SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 50) REGIONAL ROUNDUP University of California, Santa Cruz ed for what is yet to come. For the first time in nearly 10 years, the SHPE Conference was hosted in our region. It was arguably one of the best − if not the best − conference in SHPE history! As a region we had more than 500 attendees, easily surpassing our goal and allowing more than half of our membership to attend. ASU was named National Chapter of the Year. Also our region had the most professional members in attendance. These are just a few of the accomplishments. We also have had strong participation by many chapters that were inactive in recent years. As we start the new year, we are excited to see what milestones we will achieve. From our Regional Grad Lab to the various E-Week events around the region, the best is yet to come! Also remember to take advantage of RLDC hosted by UCLA. Submitted by Fausto Carrera, Regional Student Representative, and Ricardo Carlos, Vice President SHPE-UCSC members will demonstrate their robotic arm during E-Week events. SHPE-UCSC is proud to have increased membership and attendance at the SHPE Conference – large steps in helping our chapter flourish once again. Nine of the 16 active members attended the conference, compared to two of four that went last year. We are pleased to have regained student interest and expect more members to join during the next quarter. SHPE-UCSC has been funded by the Pearson Education publishing company to promote SHPE and engineering at a local high school during E-Week. We will perform a robotic arm demonstration as an example of what engineers can do when working together. To promote higher education, we will also invite students to shadow our members and attend classes for a day. Our E-Week plans support our goal of multicultural outreach with high schools and the local community. Submitted By Hector A. More than 50 people attended, including the SHPE National President Diana Gomez as well as SHPESFBA, SHPE-SV and SWE-Santa Clara Valley members. Several Tellme and Microsoft managers also attended, including Microsoft Senior Diversity Manager Fredia Brooks. McCue provided a captivating and inspirational account of how he became an entrepreneur and founded Tellme as well as the values that have made him a success. His presentation prompted a Q&A session that lasted for more than an hour. As a Tellme employee and SHPE member, I’ve been waiting more than eight years to share the fun and innovative company for which I work with SHPE members. Submitted by Jennifer Arguello, Region I Member at Large Cañada College Last year, with few members, SHPECañada was terribly inactive. Our MESA director insisted that we enhance our chapter by attending the regional conference in Sacramento, California. That weekend launched a new era for SHPE-Cañada, as we reorganized the chapter to make it grow. In the fall we formed our board, started a recruiting campaign and began using OneSHPE. Thanks to the hard work and coordination of the group, our chapter grew from three members to an amazing 54 members in less than one semester. Our goal is to maintain an active chapter. Fifteen members attended the SHPE Conference. This not only strengthened our local chapter but also the organization, since we will serve as ambassadors when we transfer to four-year institutions and start working as professionals.
