SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 51) University of Arizona SHPE-UA recently hosted the 20th Annual Young Latina Forum (YLF). This daylong event brought more than 100 high school girls on campus to learn about the importance of receiving a college education. The girls participated in two workshops and a tour. They also received guidance on applying to the university and interacted with a panel of business professionals. In the workshops, the students made homemade lip gloss and explored IBM gaming technology. “Running this event took lots of time and effort, but it was all worth it,” said Maricela Rivera, SHPE-UAYLF vice president. “Knowing that I was able to reach out to my community gave me an indescribable sense of accomplishment.” Submitted by Andrea Villa Student Chapter Executive Vice President more motivated to spread the word about SHPE to others.
