SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 52) REGIONAL ROUNDUP and science related career fields, the UC application process and financial aid opportunities. With a special focus on corporate involvement, this year’s event featured many company-hosted, hands-on workshops. Air Products and Chemicals Company conducted a liquid nitrogen demonstration, freezing bananas, marshmallows, rubber balls and flowers as well as making ice cream. Degenkolb’s workshop showed how earthquakes can affect structures. BAE Systems’ project management workshop challenged students to create something for which the specifications were constantly changing. Pacific Gas & Electric demonstrated the power of communication by preventing students from talking or gesturing while trying to solve a problem. All the students enjoyed the workshops and the final egg drop team competition. Submitted by Jennifer Lara Student Chapter Newsletter Representative in continuing their education. During our regional meeting, the students seemed excited to spread the word about SHPE’s great benefits throughout the upcoming semester. While retaining current members, one of our spring semester goals is to continue recruiting new members through the “Just Get One” campaign. Increasing our membership will get more students involved in supporting SHPE’s mission and vision. This year’s RLDC will be hosted by SHPE-UWyo in Laramie, Wyoming. The great workshops will help students advance their leadership skills and professionalism. It will be cold, but it’s worth seeing the beautiful Wyoming terrain in its winter element. The RLDC committee at SHPEUWyo has great, hard-working students, and I am excited to be working with them. Submitted by Dominic Sandoval Regional Student Representative From the Vice President Besides the Online Virtual Résumé Review and the Online Virtual Certification Practice Exam Opportunity, Region IV has also started a book club. Twice a year, we look at a technical book to increase our soft skills and a cultural book supporting Latinos in the arts. Each season Region IV offers Bits of Knowledge, which includes the latest STEM buzz. Sections include Technology Bits, Up and Coming Bits, Spotlight on Finance & Market Watch, Bio Tech Bits, Women’s Corner and Learning Corner. Check the regional website for the most recent editions. We are also embarking on Regional Philanthropy - Gift of Knowledge. We encourage all members and friends to help children by donating books to the Cabarete Dream Public Library Community Project. Reading books increases literacy, and puzzle books help with problem solving and logic − tools for math, science and engineering. Submitted by Dora Maria Abreu Regional Vice President Southwestern College Boise State University SHPE-BSU is excited to celebrate its tenth anniversary at BSU, home of the Broncos. During a celebratory banquet, we recognized those who have made SHPEBSU such a success. We were honored to have Diana Gomez, SHPE National president, as our keynote speaker. A special thanks goes to Antonina Robles for all her help in planning this event. As an exceptionally small chapter of hard-working and determined members, SHPE-BSU is taking the initiative to increase membership and have a positive impact on campus and the community. Every year our membership has increased, and we hope to continue this trend. We were excited to send 10 members to the 2008 SHPE Conference − the largest group to ever attend a conference so far. We look forward to the spring semester and accomplishing many goals. The main focus of our high school visits is to encourage local Latinos to attend college and study a STEM field. Fundraising, community service, outreach and recruitment Students build marshmallow towers during SHPE-SWC’s Science and Engineering Day. SHPE-SWC recently held its annual Science and Engineering Day at National City Middle School. For nearly eight years, this outreach event has been geared toward local middle and high school students. Two years ago it became a biannual event promoting science and engineering among even more students. The day started with guest speaker Steven Carrillo, SHPE-SD president, who motivated the students with his systems engineering experience. Throughout the day, the children participated in chemistry, physics, robotics and engineering hands-on workshops. “My favorite workshop was robotics because I got to build a robot using Legos and it walked,” said 12-year-old Francisco. Thanks to SHPE-SD’s contribution, we donated 30 scientific and five graphing calculators to encourage students 52 RSR Update I’m pleased that our region brought the most students to the SHPE Conference, and it would not have been possible without the help of all chapter leaders. Our professional and student chapters received numerous awards, including SHPE-UVA, SHPE-UPRM, SHPE-PUPR, SHPE-NYC and SHPE-CT. Students from PolySHPE and SHPE-NJIT also demonstrated their academic skills in the Technical Paper and Poster Competitions. Congratulations to all!
