opening ceremony focused on famous Latinos in sports, politics and engineering. The Spotlight Dinner featured great Latin cuisine, and the keynote speaker, alumna Iliana Limon, addressed some of the hardships and challenges Latinos face in academia and in industry. The closing ceremony attracted the largest attendance ever as Rhythm and Roots, a Latin American Folk Music ensemble, gave life to the night. Not only did the group explain the traditions and meaning behind the music, but it also gave us a performance to remember. Submitted by Carlos Hernandez, Student Chapter Treasurer, and Paula Bustos, President Massachusetts Institute of Technology In order to increase our chapter’s visibility and improve faculty relations, we hosted Finger Foods with the Faculty. The casual event facilitated communication between students and faculty members while also promoting the Hispanic community. Held in the Latino Cultural Center, our event featured appetizers from a local Mexican restaurant. In addition to renowned faculty members invited by the executive board, SHPE members were encouraged to invite their professors. Students noted that the atmosphere for conversation was much less intimidating than inside the classroom. Freshmen were particularly drawn to this event, as it allowed them to talk to professors in different fields and get better insight into possible areas of interests. Our executive board was very pleased with the turnout which drew prominent faculty members such as Chancellor Phillip L. Clay and President Susan Hockfield. Submitted by L.Torres and Giorgio R. SHPE-UML is a small chapter with 100 percent paid membership. Forty percent of our members attended this year’s conference, where they participated in career development workshops and corporate tours and networked with professionals. For some members, it was a first glance at the caliber of training and corporate support SHPE provides. Many of our members received offers for full-time positions and internships, so members are even more motivated to attend upcoming conferences such as RLDC and ETCC. We also plan on involving our SHPE Jr. chapters in more events and recruiting the next generation of SHPE www.SHPE.org ❘ Winter 2009 University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Once again SHPE-UPRM has accomplished another goal, bringing 81 members to the SHPE Conference. Along with students from across the nation, they attended various seminars and workshops to develop their leadership and networking skills. Most received interviews, and some had internship and coop offers right on site. SHPE-UPRM was also recognized as the Outstanding Large Chapter in Region IV.
