SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 57) In the fall, two programs had the goal of teaching minority high school students how to be successful in college. During Viva Technology, SHPE-UH and SHPERice members worked with groups of high school students to build task-driven devices. The event allowed the students to practice STEM skills and teamwork in order to complete a task. In addition to helping them with the project, the SHPE members also explained the college lifestyle and the hard work required to be successful. SHPE-UH also joined SHPE-Houston for College Night at Davis High School, where we helped students with their college applications and scholarship essays. It was a privilege working with these students; even though we critiqued their essays, we also gave them guidance. They looked up to our members and hope to become successful in college. By reaching out socially and academically to Houston youths, we feel that we are making a difference with minority students. We value those ideas because our talented engineers and scientists use them to create first-of-a-kind systems and engineering innovations. Working at Draper takes place in a highly collaborative environment where people from different backgrounds and experiences bring diverse ideas to facilitate fresh thinking and innovative solutions to real-world problems. EEO/AA Employer Southern Methodist University During the SHPE Conference, SHPESMU was invited to the AHETEMS Pre-College Symposia Dinner honoring Jaime Escalante. The recipient of the Presidential Medal for Excellence in Education and renowned mathematics professor enlightened attendees with practical advice for overcoming obstacles. He also advocated a message of perseverance and the will to succeed. His heartfelt speech demonstrated the passion that ignited his career in education, and by the end of the night, he motivated each person in the ballroom to follow the dreams that may have previously appeared futile. Although a bit star-struck, our chapter concurred that Jaime Escalante exuded a humility that seemed uncharacteristic for one with his accomplishments. This man exemplifies everything that SHPE aims to accomplish: improving the number of Hispanics in engineering, math and science as well as advocating excellence in education and community empowerment. We were truly honored to meet such an inspiring individual, and this experience served to showcase how hard work can inspire a lasting legacy.
