SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 58) REGIONAL ROUNDUP Texas A&M University our members, ranging from sophomores to graduate students, took advantage of the workshops, networking events and corporate tours that were offered. The career fair gave us the opportunity to network with professional representatives and interview with top companies. The hospitality suites also allowed more opportunities for students to network with professionals and find jobs or internship opportunities. The state also was represented by our friends from Missouri S&T. This shows the commitment of both chapters to increase membership and promote professional and leadership development among local students. We look forward to a successful 2009. We will see you all again in Washington! Submitted by Marco Cruz-Galve Vice Regional Student Representative The Aggie Replant tradition united SHPETAMU members in community service. SHPE-Kettering celebrates Dia de Los Muertos. Replant is a longtime Aggie tradition where several organizations on campus plant trees throughout the community. It began as a method to compensate for the trees destroyed during the bonfire era, but has also united the community in a wonderful service. SHPE-TAMU is constantly involved in community service events and used this opportunity to give back to our city. Approximately 15 members participated in planting four trees. The weather was perfect for the outdoor activity. It also allowed us to enjoy the company of fellow SHPE members and socialize with others from fraternities, sororities and engineering organizations who assisted in providing a better environment for everyone. SHPETAMU looks forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come. Submitted by Michael Mendez Student Chapter Vice President Missouri University of Science and Technology ebrate our culture with the campus community and promote our chapter. We also collaborated with NSBE to offer a professional development workshop. The four members who went to Phoenix have spurred much interest in going to Washington, D.C., next fall. Spring plans include holding workshops at local high schools or churches to educate and inspire young Latinos in the Flint community to take up careers in STEM. We also plan on doing more philanthropic work and aim to have a big impact despite our size. R. Swanegan, our Director of Diversity Initiatives. Thirteen of After a long journey home from the SHPE Conference, it was gratifying to see how much we learned and how many people we met in only a few days. SHPE-MS&T benefitted from networking with professionals and witnessing how large chapters were not afraid to show their school spirit and passion for all of their accomplishments. Nevertheless, it was truly an honor to be part of a small, united chapter like SHPEMS&T. Nine members who attended represented diverse majors and ages, but they were together all the time. We were very fortunate to have sponsors like Chevron who made this trip possible. Now, we have even more enthusiasm and motivation to make changes so that someday, we’ll walk across the stage to receive an award. Submitted by Stephanie Hurtado During the fall, SHPE-UIC held a Halloween outreach event during which members visited a daycare center and gave the children candy and games to enjoy. More than 20 members representing a good percentage of the chapter attended the SHPE Conference. As finals approached, we held a stress management workshop to help us cope with our academic troubles. Toward the end of the semester, we also had frequent study nights so that members could gather in a class and study certain subjects. We also held a couple of meetings with companies such as the Illinois Department of Transportation. The semester was busy, but a good one, overall.
