SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 59) SHPE-FSU’s International Dinner united diverse members through food and dance. In one year, SHPE-NoCATE nearly doubled its conference participation. members in the chapter, it was a perfect way to build stronger relationships and enhance the spirit of unity and cooperation. Thanks to a group of students from the Colombian Student Association (ColSA) that presented a traditional national dance and the Mexican food from El Tapatío, the International Dinner was a great success. Submitted by Elizabeth Yau Student Chapter Historian University of South Florida SHPE-USF has been recruiting new members through informative and fun events. For our annual barbecue social, we invited members, old and new, to meet the new executive board. Throughout the semester, general meetings featured guest speakers from INROADS, MOSAIC and TECO. Other events we held this semester were Celebrating and Acknowledging Successful Hispanics (CASH) and Salsaween. All of our recruiting efforts paid off at the conference. Once again, SHPE-USF had a large attendance at both the SHPE Conference and HENAAC. Members took first and third places in the HENAAC College Bowl, and one member won “best comedian.” Taking 42 students to the SHPE Conference, we broke our record from last year. Many of our participants, who ranged from freshmen to doctoral students, acquired interviews and a couple received internship offers. Overall, SHPEUSF had a great semester and anticipates the exciting events planned for the spring. Last year, we formed a soccer team to compete in an intramural tournament. This year we started organizing in the summer and helped establish an intramural league. SHPE-NoCATE organized a team that was set on winning the championship. Consistent practice helped us achieve that goal, winning the finals in an impressive fashion. Its victory brought team members closer together and united our organiza- tion as a whole. We are proud to have nearly doubled our participation at the 2008 SHPE Conference (from nine to 17 students), and two members were selected for the Extreme Engineering Challenge. Although many challenges lie ahead, we are very proud to see how much our organization has grown and improved toward becoming a successful organization.
