SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 6) BROWSER ❚ News of Particular Interest to Society Members SHPE Speaks for E-Week All professional and student SHPE members are encouraged to become engineering ambassadors during National Engineers Week, or E-Week, February 15-21, 2009. The SHPE Speaks program promotes careers in engineering among K-12 students. Chapters can adapt various community outreach activities into a SHPE Speaks event, and participating chapters receive 200 points on the National Point System. To receive SHPE Speaks t-shirts, contact Hands-on E-Week activities NUR Alejandra Hernandez at alejandra.hernandez show that engineering is creative and fun. @shpe.org with the name and description of your event and number of participants no later than January 31, 2009. Add this event to your ACE proposal (due April 15, 2009) for funding during the next academic year. Mastering the EOY By Antonina Robles, National Affairs Committee Chairwoman The End of the Year (EOY) Report is a great opportunity for student and professional chapters to showcase what they have done throughout the year. It allows SHPE to learn about a chapter’s activities, budget, executive board, goals and accomplishments (past, present and future). It also serves to preserve the chapter’s history for future generations of leaders. Last, but not least, submitting the report qualifies a chapter to compete for SHPE National chapter awards. Here are a few tips to complete a perfect EOY report. 1. Follow the NEW guidelines and template. 2. Meet the deadline: April 15, 2009. 3. Complete Continuous Feedback Forms (CFF) accurately for all five categories: a. Professional Development (i.e., company tours, professional guest speakers, speaker series) b. Leadership Development (i.e., RLDC host, executive board transition retreat) c. Chapter Development (i.e., barbecue, bowling nights, fundraisers) d. Academic Development* (i.e., GPA competitions, tutoring, freshmen mentors) e. Outreach/Community Service (i.e., high school visits, E-week, volunteering at university or community events ) 4. Provide an events calendar, chapter history and continuity of programs. 5. Provide a list of viable and attainable goals. 6. Provide a summary of accomplishments and achieved goals. 7. Ensure professional presentation by reviewing style and checking spelling/grammar. 8. Include Advisor’s signature* 9. Provide a conclusion. 10. Don’t exceed the 50-page limit. * applies to student chapters only A Call for Candidates Are you an active member of SHPE with great ideas for improving the national organization? Do you want to cultivate your leadership skills, encourage organizational ownership and broaden your networking opportunities? Well, now’s your chance to act. SHPE National will soon hold elections to determine the new members of the National Board of Directors (NBOD) and regional student representatives (RSRs). The NBOD professional positions up for election this year are the national president, vice president and regional vice presidents for Region I, Region III, Region V and Region VII. Their two-year term of office runs from July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2011. Three student members are also elected to the NBOD: the national and vice national undergraduate representatives and the national graduate representative. Seven positions are also available for RSRs, one from each region. The one-year term of office for student representatives is from July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2010. Don’t miss this opportunity to challenge yourself while improving your leadership ability and your résumé. For more information, contact Jennifer Argüello, elections chairwoman, at elections@shpe.org. ■ Timeline for 2009 SHPE National Elections February 15: Membership payment due to be eligible to run for office or vote. March 15: Nomination form with signatures and biography due. April 4: Ballots and biographies sent to eligible voters. May 16: Ballots due and counted. May 19: Winners and runoff election schedule (if necessary) announced. July 1: Winners take office. Is Your Chapter on Point? By Arianna Raymundo, National Affairs Co-chair and NPS Chair The National Point System (NPS) encourages chapter involvement in activities that SHPE National considers important for all chapters. The program provides opportunities for members to grow their participation and contribute to their chapter’s success. Chapters that meet 95 percent of NPS criteria achieve National Blue Chip status, while those meeting 90 percent obtain National Five Star status. It is great to see student and professional chapters from all regions participating in NPS. I 6 am very impressed by the coordination among chapters who are working to achieve Blue Chip and Five Star status. Please note that a spring calendar of events as well as continuous feedback forms (CFFs) for January and January's Chapter Development Month events are due on February 15, 2009. When E-mailing nps@shpe.org to claim points, please include region, chapter name and an itemized list of what is being submitted. Questions may be sent to Arianna Raymundo at arianna.raymundo@shpe.org. ■ Submitting the EOY report has never been easier. Simply log in to OneSHPE and click on “Chapter Tools.” After selecting the university, select report and click submit. There will be regional conference calls during January to go over the new guidelines and templates. Have your questions ready in regard to the EOY report. For more information, contact Antonina Robles, NAC chairwoman, at nac@shpe.org. ■ SHPE ❘ Winter 2009
