SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 64) National Conference Washington, D.C. Gomez with Texas Congressman Rúben Hinojosa. With more than 2,600 in attendance, the 2007 SHPE Conference marked the largest gathering of Hispanic engineering professionals and students in the country as well as in the Society’s 33-year history. Moving the conference into the fall timeframe not only served corporate partners with top-notch talent during the height of the recruiting season but also gave members an edge in the increasingly competitive global job market. Many of these members came away with multiple job offers. General Motors was recognized with the STAR Company of the Year Award for the leadership roles its representatives have played on the Industrial PartnerSHPE Council, its support of STEM awareness and education in the Hispanic community and its commitment to promoting the achievements of Hispanic employees. In SHPE’s third annual membership survey, Kimberly-Clark, IBM and Texas Instruments were identified as the top companies for Hispanics in the technology industry based on growing opportunities and upward mobility for Latinos; best recruitment practices and SHPE involvement; and co-op/internship opportunities. Members of the SHPE-Los Angeles Professional Chapter were instrumental in organizing the 2007 Competitive Crisis Council Summit. It featured a Congressional Field Hearing before four representatives of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education, Lifelong Learning and Competitiveness. The distinguished witnesses they secured not only provide compelling testimony as to the state of STEM education but also offered recommendations considered during reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act. The summit was also an opportunity for SHPE’s Diana Gomez and Consortium representatives from MAES and SACNAS to collaborate with other organizations and corporations in forming synergetic partnerships to expand STEM-related programs and services to the Latino community. Professional Development Demonstrating a commitment to advance the careers of its professional members, SHPE was proud to sponsor the second installments of both Management Growth Training and the Executive LeaderSHPE Institute. MGT provides SHPE members having five to 10 years of professional experience with comprehensive training on everything from project and financial management to emotional intelligence and interpersonal communications. Reserved for members identified by their companies as having executive potential, ELI increases leadership effectiveness through strategic planning, masterful communications and selfdiscovery. Also, all professional members benefit from the variety of seminars presented as part of the Professional Development Strategy of the annual SHPE Conference. AHETEMS Graduates of ELI and MGT 2007. Leaders in Training During 2007-2008, the Society’s partner organization, Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology Engineering Math and Science (AHETEMS) Inc., awarded more than $480,000 in merit- and need-based scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing STEM careers. It also joined two other organizations in selecting 100 undergraduate students for participation in NASA’s Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST) Scholarship Program. AHETEMS also distributed more than $150,000 to fund local chapter Advancing Careers in Engineering (ACE) activities which introduce K-12 students to educational and career STEM opportunities. On the pre-college level, AHETEMS organized three SciTech Summer Camps, increased the number of SHPE Jr. chapters and expanded the Regional Science Bowl competitions to three middle schools in addition to six high schools. During the Pre-College Symposia, 900 middle and high school students received information and inspiration to pursue STEM educations and careers. They also participated in hands-on activities and college-prep workshops. The Society’s National Institute for Leadership Advancement (NILA) provides an intense program for training student and professional chapter officers. The skills they receive during various seminars are put to use as they prepare case study presentations on some of the organization’s most pressing issues. The program has consistently resulted in producing highly qualified leaders who produce phenomenal results such as a manual that compiles the time-tested best practices of SHPE’s most successful chapters. During the spring, similar training takes place on the regional level to transition incoming executive board officers.
