SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 65) Dear Members: The following financial documents for fiscal year 2007-2008 are being provided in compliance with the SHPE Bylaws Articles 21 and 22 and California Code 8321 and 8322. The Statement of Activities and Statement of Financial Position are non-audited versions, as the final Audit Review report is not yet available. No transactions of the type described in Sections 22.1 and 22.2 of the organization’s bylaws occurred during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008. This fiscal year, eight companies joined the SHPE Industrial PartnerSHPE Council (IPC), for a closing total of 50. Lifetime memberships increased by 26 persons. The ongoing World Expansion Project resulted in several of our international members attending our national conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This not only brought global networking to reality, but also heightened the commitment of these members to provide presenters on topics of interest for the next conference. The financial posture of the organization continued to solidify, resulting in a decision to purchase property in the Washington, D.C., area. Establishing this additional site will contribute toward better positioning for the organization. A partnership consortium between the three Hispanic science/engineering organizations − SHPE, Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES) − was formed to collaborate on common organizational issues. The Consortium hired a joint Legislative Intern in Washington, D.C., who is focused on developing appropriate relationships as well as increasing exposure for the Consortium as a testimonial expert in education/programs areas related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Meetings with various congressional representatives resulted in several invitations for SHPE to present at committee hearings. The IBM Corporation continued its partnership with SHPE through its dedicated regional IBM SWAT Team Leaders who support local chapters and members. SHPE’s focus on professional development continued through the second Management Growth Training class, a second Executive LeaderSHPE Institute and, through the initiative of the Region VII Vice President, its first few webinars. SHPE also sustained its partnerships with Kaplan, LatPro, College Loan Corporation, ShopWithPurpose, GEM Consortium, Monster Diversity Leadership Program, Arizona GEAR UP and Hispanic College Fund. Its partnership with Society of Women Engineers (SWE) for dual memberships continues to be successful. The National Board also added a Graduate Student Representative who could better vocalize the perspective and feedback of the graduate student contingency. Sunwest Communications expanded its marketing to secure media interviews for SHPE. The Board’s decision to move the SHPE Conference into the fall resulted in a significant challenge in that for some sponsors, two conferences fell within the same calendar year. The challenge was approached head-on through careful event planning and close financial monitoring, and the organization successfully prevailed. The keynote motivational speaker, Victor Gonzalez (who gratefully credits completing his degree to a former SHPE advisor), developed a video at the conference highlighting his experience and presentation. The film later won Documentary Film Director’s Choice 2008 Award at the Rincon International Film Festival in Puerto Rico and was also nominated for Best Feature Documentary at the Orlando Film Festival 2008. Both resulted in furthering SHPE’s exposure. Through its partner organization, Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology Engineering Math and Science (AHETEMS), higher education initiatives continued through Grad Labs, Grad Institutes, GRE Prep and Exam Institutes and GEM conference attendance. On the pre-college level, an additional nine SHPE Jr. chapters were formed. Another edition of the bilingual EduComic, a partnership endeavor with Los Kitos targeting middle school students, was sponsored by United Technologies Corporation and distributed. AHETEMS, on behalf of SHPE, executed successful pre-college programs such as middle and high school Regional Science Bowls in New Mexico, Texas, California, Illinois, Florida and Puerto Rico. It also conducted SciTech Summer Camps in California, Arizona, Texas and Colorado. AHETEMS further supported SHPE’s membership by continuing to administer IPC-sponsored scholarships. This included additional scholarships from CDM, Walmart, Kellogg, United States Steel Corporation and ExxonMobil as well as internships from the Department of Energy (DOE), CDM, NASA Marshall and NHTSA. This year, the DOE designated SHPE to lead a three-year grant to administer an internship program for the Consortium. A program partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) was also established. Any final proceeds resulting from the audit will be categorized as restricted income for upcoming program execution.
