SHPE - Winter 2009 - (Page 8) BROWSER NOTAR SHPE National President Diana Gomez was recently promoted to Chief, Office of System Management, Caltrans Headquarters. She was also named the recipient of the prestigious 2008 Diversity Leadership Award presented by Advancing Women in Transportation, Sacramento Chapter. The award recognizes astute organizations, companies and innovative individuals that are broadening their multicultural initiatives, changing corporate cultures and philosophies. It honors individuals and organizations for being bold in their support and promotion of diversity, inclusiveness and multicultural awareness within their organization, the transportation industry or in a project or activity that supports the WTS Diversity goals and mission. Past national president and SHPE lifetime member Orlando Gutierrez recently donated $1,000 to AHETEMS for the purpose of starting a member-based endowment fund. “SHPE has done many things for many people in the Hispanic engineering community,” he said, “and those of us who can afford it should contribute to the future programs of SHPE. While we have many corporate and government supporters, as individuals we should also contribute financial support. As we include AHETEMS among the charitable causes to which we give, keep in mind that any contribution to AHETEMS is tax deductible.” The U.S. Department of Transportation recently recognized Rodrigo Garcia, SHPE founder and past president, with the President’s Voluntary Community Service Award. It is the highest award a person can receive from the President of the United States for his/her volunteer efforts. In Garcia’s case, it was for the establishment of and continual work with SHPE. In accepting the award, Garcia shared the purpose for establishing the Society as well as its objectives but added that none of its accomplishments could have happened without the involvement and dedication of other SHPE members. Rafaela Ornelas-Schwan has been selected as one of the 22 Latinas for the 2009 National Hispana Leadership Institute (NHLI), Executive Leadership Program. It is an opportunity to be part of a national network of Hispanic women who are dedicated to personal integrity, ethical leadership and the highest standards of public service. Her selection was based on the commitment, leadership and desire she has demonstrated to advance the Hispanic community. SHPE Lifetime member Irene Hernandez Roberts has been recognized as Technologist of the Year at the National Women of Color Technology Award Conference. As Program Director and Master Inventor with Independent Software Vendor and Developer Relations of the IBM Software Group, she holds more than 70 patents, 11 Invention Achievement Awards and 108 IBM technical disclosures. Roberts also initiated a “Find a Mentor” program to help connect Hispanic employees and brought in other executives to participate in professional development and career advancement panels. Dr. Ramon Flores, a member of the Ventura County Professional Chapter, was recently elected by a 30-point margin to the county’s Board of Education. In his role as vice president, he will work with the County Superintendent of Schools to establish the direction and priorities for the county office through its budgetary responsibilities as well as provide community leadership on behalf of the county office and public education. The board oversees 21 public school districts with a K-12 student population that currently exceeds 145,000 students. SHPE Corporate Achievement Award recipient, Grace Lieblein has been appointed as President and General Manager of General Motors de Mexico. She is GM’s highest-ranked Latina executive, GM’s first Latina vehicle chief engineer and the very first woman to serve in this role. She will be profiled in a future issue of SHPE magazine. Correction: In the Conference 2008 issue, Jeet Bindra’s title was inaccurately stated. He is President of Chevron Global Manufacturing. We regret the error.
