SilverLink - Fall 2008 - (Page 35) INTERNAL HAPPENINGS People & Community The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society The Omaha Royals drew a near capacity crowd for the August 25 doubleheader with the Oklahoma RedHawks at Rosenblatt Stadium. SilverStone Group conducted an auction of special red jerseys that were worn by the Royals during the second half of the twin bill—raising $2,580 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. SilverStone Group’s own Tony Sorrentino serves as the President of the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and as Chairman of the Corporate Contributions Committee. Tony has been a Board member since 1992 and is one of the founding members of the Team-In-Training program, which raises almost half of all funds generated for leukemia research. “We are fortunate to have the University of Nebraska research department here locally,” Tony said, “and (that we) have been able to sponsor and fund grants for that department (to) benefit local patients and their families.” “We are grateful for our partnership with SilverStone Group,” said Royals General Manager Martie Cordaro. “With their support, we were able to raise much-needed funds to help with research and patient programs and services for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.” Shown holding the check for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: Omaha Royals Pitching Coach Tom Burgmeier, SilverStone Group’s Tony Sorrentino, Omaha Royals General Manager Martie Cordaro, SilverStone Group’s John H. Nelson & Pattie Gorham from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Nebraska. “The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is thrilled with its partnership with the SilverStone Group and the Omaha Royals and we look forward to working with them in the future,” said the Society’s Executive Director Pattie Gorham. “The crowd was tremendous and their support even better and we are grateful.” Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo Jeff and Becky Sharp put great value in volunteer work. They began by organizing neighborhood activities, and over the years have served on numerous boards, including Fontenelle Nature Association, the Omaha Children’s Museum, Countryside Community Church and Westside Schools. During the past year, Jeff and Becky served as cochairs of the 2008 Henry Doorly Zoo membership drive. Becky worked with Zoo staff and volunteers to plan the Patron membership drive, which began in November 2007; this was followed by the regular membership drive in February 2008. During March and April, Jeff and Becky hosted weekly progress meetings. Thanks to their diligence and excellent leadership, the membership campaign successfully reached its goal of 62,000 members, including 952 Patron Benefactors. Jeff and Becky focus their volunteer work around their children, their church and nature. When their sons were young, the entire family served Thanksgiving meals at the Salvation Army. Jeff and Becky believe that including the entire family emphasizes the importance of giving back and shows by example that people working together really can make a difference. When asked about their volunteer experiences, the Sharps stated, “People just need to jump in, making sure they are volunteering for something they truly feel passionate about. It is really true that when you give your time freely to an organization or project, you receive far more in return.” SilverStone Group applauds the Spirit of Giving Back and is proud to have the Sharps as an Associate family. 35 SILVERLINK — FALL 2008
