Excellence in Teaching Awards SilverStone Group’s founder, H. H. “Red” Nelson, and his wife, Ruth, were enthusiastic supporters of education. To honor their memory, this past May the H.H. “Red” and Ruth H. Nelson Family Foundation presented the ﬁrst annual Excellence in Teaching Awards to ﬁve outstanding teachers. Nominees were required to have a minimum of two years experience as a certiﬁed teacher or counselor in the Council Bluffs School District or the Lewis Central School School District. Nominations were taken from students, former students, parents, other teachers, school administrators and the general public. The honorees were chosen for the inﬂuence they have on the development of their students and the part they play to help maintain Council Bluffs’ and Lewis Central’s longstanding reputation for educational excellence. The recipients display exceptional leadership, vision, dedication to teaching and willingness to go “above and beyond” for their students. The ﬁrst winners were John Drake, government teacher from Lewis Central High School, Dr. Al Hudek, teaching math and talented/gifted at Thomas Jefferson High School, Mary Reid, a preschool teacher from Lewis & Clark Elementary, Linda Hahn, teaching kindergarten and ﬁrst grade at Kreft Elementary and Joan Von Tersch-Crampton, preschool teacher at Roosevelt Elementary. Each winner received a trophy, presented by John P. Nelson at an awards ceremony at the winner’s school, along with a $5,000 cash award. SilverStone Group’s Principals attended a Leadership Coaching & Ethics presentation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, led by Athletic Director and 3-time national champion coach, Tom Osborne. After reviewing the ’97 Orange Bowl game (UNL vs. Tennessee), the group toured the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex and Memorial Stadium.
