SilverLink - Winter 2008 - (Page 11) risk ManageMent Aviation Industry It All Began with a Cup of Coffee by Shane Osborn & Charles Parmley Today’s Ocean Marine insurance industry is said to have had its beginnings in 1688 in a London coffee house owned by Edward Lloyd. (Remember that name!) Over coffee, Lloyd held private meetings with his clients—ships’ captains, merchants who used the captains’ vessels to transport their cargo and wealthy individuals who provided financial capital for the voyages. The group members discussed the value of a specific ship and its cargo and agreed that this value would be adhered to in the event of loss. These arrangements formed the rudimentary beginnings of the insurance industry, and the organization that is now known as Lloyd’s of London was born. Fast forward in time to the early 1900s—and the birth of aviation and the need for coverage against exposure and loss. Early insurance companies struggled with the uniqueness of this new industry.
